Two RAF airmen were mistakenly shot down and killed by an inexperienced American missile crew during the Iraq war, it was revealed today.
Flight Lieutenants Kevin Main and David Williams died after their Tornado fighter-bomber was hit by a US Patriot missile as they came in to land in Kuwait.
An RAF board of inquiry today revealed that the US missile crew had mistaken the plane for an incoming Iraqi missile. Equipment failure in both the plane and the missile system was also a factor, the inquiry concluded.
Flt Lts Main, the pilot, and Williams, the navigator, were returning from a mission to bomb Iraqi air defences round Baghdad when they were downed on the night of 22 March last year.
