B.C. avian flu likely harmless

Canadian Press

Vancouver — Tests on geese at a B.C. farm have ruled out a dangerous type of avian flu that killed people in Asia, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed Thursday.

But results are still awaited on samples from ducks on the same property before it can be ruled out that an H5 subtype of the flu virus was on the Abbotsford farm, said Dr. Cornelius Kiley, a CFIA spokesman.P>

“There is strong evidence indicating the geese were exposed to the H6 avian influenza virus,” said a CFIA statement.

“The H6 virus is not associated with serious animal or human illness.”

Dr. Kiley couldn't say when testing on the ducks would be complete.
