In Europe, U.S. faulted
Elaine Sciolino NYT

Friday, May 14, 2004

PARIS Reflecting anger and impotence over the chaos in Iraq, President Jacques Chirac of France and Chancellor Gerhard Schröder of Germany on Thursday criticized the abuse of Iraqi prisoners by American soldiers and expressed horror over the beheading of an American civilian there.
.
Their comments, made to reporters after a meeting at Elysée Palace, coincided with an interview by France's new foreign minister, Michel Barnier, who said France would never send troops to help stabilize Iraq. "It is out of the question," Barnier was quoted as saying in Thursday's Le Monde newspaper. "There will be no French soldiers in Iraq, not now and not later."
.
A senior aide to Chirac said afterward that Barnier's declaration accurately reflected the position of the French government. The official added that Chirac did not want the United States to think there was any possibility of the deployment of French troops to Iraq, even if there was a Security Council resolution transferring sovereignty to the Iraqi people.

1. We will have to go a day because Iraq is our backyard.
We have no interest that Americans fail or Iraq turns into islamic country. But we could only send troops under UN-led.

5. My husband and I are thinking of moving out of the US
if Bush is put back in office next November. I was asking whether or not France would be a good place to live and would be easy to emigrate to.

8. Thinking the same thing here...Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Denmark..
...anyplace else, but then again...when Bush Co decides to Nuke the World, none of us are safe...

We just figure we will spend our final years, months, weeks, days, hours and down to the last seconds drinking great wine, eating good food and saying "Vive la resistance" "Pace" "Skol" etc surrounded by people who don't watch Faux news and say Heil Bush...

:Toast:

4. Even if troops are under "UN" flag many European countries
can´t politacally help out. The US painted these countries into a corner.

The US will never release their control of Iraq to the UN - whatever spin Powell tries to sell at the general assembly...

6. What is not being said but is very strongly implied, imo...
in this statement:

"A senior aide to Chirac said afterward that Barnier's declaration accurately reflected the position of the French government. The official added that Chirac did not want the United States to think there was any possibility of the deployment of French troops to Iraq, even if there was a Security Council resolution transferring sovereignty to the Iraqi people."

are these words: as long as you represent the United States.
