6. CNN now reporting it
he said it during today's taping of tonight's Late Night.

And right after Feinstein rules out a run, too. I'm afraid the Dems will need to field a stronger candidate than Davis to overcome the name recognition factor with Ah-nuld.

He will not win, and if he does, it will be with 30% of the vote--hardly makes him legitimate. If he loses, he'll be remembered as the guy who blew it--say good-bye to her political career, like he should say good-bye to his floundering acting career.

64. How did Davis mess up California?
Let's see ... as I recall Bill Maher recently recounted ...

Davis caused energy deregulation in California and the energy crisis, and consequently caused Enron, El Paso, Duke, etc. to make big bucks.

Davis caused the dot-com bust.

Davis caused the war in Iraq.

Davis is now causing war in North Korea. IMHO.

42. I'm sure Rove had a hand in this!
The media have been covering the Scott Peterson and Kobe Bryant stories ad nauseum!

Rove is no fool! Placing Arnold into play in this recall is a GOP home run of mass distraction! These 3 stories will dominate the air waves for the foreseeable future...and, nothing else!

So, Bush gets another pass, and the GOP is (likely) to steal another election! And, a sitting GOP governor in California will help Bush in the presidential election next year! Remember, the Dems cannot win the 2004 election without California!

any intelligent person should now realize that the recall is a circus of the most insane carnival kind. I'm kinda glad - because if no one had challenged that Republican shithead who started all this it might have looked like a legitimate attempt to govern, but now even the most intellectually challenged must realize that this is just an attempt to preempt a legitmate government.

you are right. There is plenty to say about this guy without getting into his Austrian heritage.

1. He's never run for any public office before, not even City Councilman.

2. What is his agenda for the state? Does anyone know? Has he said publically what would make the citizens of California choose him?

3. Who supports him in this effort? Companies? Local groups? Californians should know.

22. Underestimating Bush is how we lost in 2000
Trying to tie Arnie to nazi's will backfire. Playing the Hitler card may be cute but it doesn't play in Peoria....or in this case Pasadena. I also find that few people care about a young actor being in racy movies and alledgedly doing coke. (not my rumors..heard them here)

I agree with DavidD, we need to exploit the fact that he has no experience or policies. Otherwise name and reputation will will the day for him.

If Feinstein runs, she wins hands down. Without someone like DiFi in the race, Arnold will have the highest name recognition. I believe he will most likely become the next govoner of the state of California.

We need to recognize that Davis is toast. Very few people I talk to in Cali (most progressives) like the guy. We need to run an alternative candidate or we will end up with a repub gov.

29. Blessing in Disguise ?
In purely cold political terms, this could be a blessing for the Democrats.

California is in crappy shape financially. While Gray Davis is not the most imaginative politician in the world, the condition of the finances is more due to Proposition 13 and other circumstances beyond his control, than to any failure on his part. Arnold is a neophyte, he has never run anything more than his mouth. Given that the state is a disaster financially anyway, and is not likely to improve no matter who is in there...it might be better for the Democrats in the long run for a bumbler like Arnold to be in there when it happens. It could hand the state to the Democrats as far as the eye can see.

43. Seriously, there is another thread attacking the
qualifications of people who have run successful businesses, and there are people here who have attacked Clark because he has 'only' proven himself a success in the military. What has Arnold done? Even Reagan had been president of SAG before he became a governor. This sets an awful precedent, or perhaps, considering Ventura, supports an awful precedent. I actually like Arnold for his drive, and think he'd be a moderate, but I think it's a dangerous gamble for the state of California to make him governor. This, the Gary Coleman foolishness, all of it underscores how destructive the entire recall is.

34. California's gonna get its own version of MN's Jesse Ventura!
Remember his campaign, because we will probably see the same thing happen in Cali as happened here in MN. NO ONE thought Ventura stood a chance, but he used his ex-WWF wrestler fame to capture the young voters, especially college students. Young Californians will likely eat Arnold up because "its cool to have a movie star governor." Hell, I wouldn't be surprised to see Ventura at a fundraiser or two for Arnold out there; they are pretty good friends and were in a few movies together.

Rove probably had his hand in this: get people guessing whether or not he'll run, plant a story saying he won't, then steal the headlines when he announces he will. Classic Rove.

The puke party will now throw all its weight behind Ah-nold, because they want CA's 54 electoral votes. How getting him in power accomplishes this is beyond me. Last time I looked, the legislature was all Democrats. They're not going to be happy with an unproven puke grabbing power in a recall. He won't get anything passed.

This isn't a movie.

Why would someone with his bank account want this job? Well, it's not that he's concerned about the welfare of California. It's about his ego.

I notice there's a lot of caterwauling on this board about Davis and how he's going down.

I personally think Davis is going to win the recall. He's not even begun to campaign, and I'm sure he's going to excoriate the Bush administration when he does. He will focus his attacks not on the other anklebiters; it's going to be Davis vs. Bush.

Take on the whole regime.
CA better be careful what they wish for. Jesse Ventura was a novelty for MN and when it is all said and done, there were no major accomplishments and the state is now in a big hole. Partly thanks to his tax rebate checks. Then he picked up his toys and went home, leaving us to flounder.

67. I've posted for months now it was foolish startegy to say Davis or nothing
Ready to believe me now ?

Arnold will win. The Ca party had all the time it needed to present a viable alternative to Davis, Leon Panetta comes to mind.
I think it's too late now. Any significant break from Davis now will simply look like panic. Panic doesn't win.

How did it become a matter of dogma that Davis had to be defended to the last man like the Alamo ? It was OBVIOUS he had failed as governor and had lost the support of Californians. A governor with 20 % ratings is untenable when facing a well fiannced recall campaign in a state with a long history of recall ateempts. What total arrogance to ignore the revulsion against Davis when there were winnable options.

California isn't being lost or stolen, it's being thrown away.

71. tlb, don't throw in the towel yet
would it have been better politics to throw Davis overboard after he won the election? You throw those guys weakness and they feed on it for months. Gray is a Vietnam Vet who has won many elections, let him make his case. We got a while until October, and if everything is still downhill from there, this is the land of celebrity--I'm sure there will be a Democratic superstar to step up. Meanwhile--Gray needs to make his case, and I can't believe the Democratic party left him to the wolves after Enron. What, were they on vacation? Enron was hay, Political Hay, but they left Gray to twist all alone. We need to reconsider our party leadership if this is how we treat victims of powerhouses like Enron.

70. Any chance of another Republican coming in and splitting the vote?
Suppose if Riordan came in too? Or some other Repub? Any chance they could prevent Arnold's getting over 50 percent?

Or does the plurality win?

72. We don't know yet
Riordan is probably out since he is a moderate like "Ah-nuld" suposedly is. But, Darryl Issa funded this whole fiasco in the hopes of being Governor--he's got a campaign office and everything. Problem is he's a total right winger who could never win. So the stupid dope just spent a fortune getting another man elected (maybe) who doesn't even share his ideology on abortion, gay marriage, everything execpt tax cuts.
