Senators Set Hearings on Iraq Prisoner Abuse
Senators Set Hearings on Iraq Prisoner Abuse
Mon May 10, 2004 01:23 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Following up on Friday's grilling of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld on mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners, the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday will question the Army general who wrote a report outlining the abuses.

Senators in the morning will question Maj. Gen. Antonio Taguba, who described egregious mistreatment of Iraqi inmates at a U.S.-run prison near Baghdad, a committee spokesman said on Monday.

In the afternoon, the committee will question Under Secretary of Defense Steven Cambone, who is in charge of intelligence, and other Pentagon officials about the scandal that has sparked international outrage.

In his report completed in March, Taguba cited the "systematic and illegal abuses of detainees," and said between October and December 2003, "numerous incidents of sadistic, blatant, and wanton criminal abuses were inflicted on several detainees."

2. If the Bush Regime doesn't steal the election,...
,...I hope all these hearings lead to criminal charges against these greedy, corrupt, corporatist, war mongering, traitors.

Ugh, I hate them. I can't help myself. I hate them.

17. Stealing the election
is a given. They will do ANYTHING, and I do mean ANYTHING to steal the vote. They hijacked our democracy once before and still have in place all the "tools" - same Supreme Court injustices - as they did before. They've bought the voting machines and probably have binLaden in custody somewhere just waiting for Oct. to spring his capture on the American public.

They have no shame, no morals and only care about power and it's uses to enrich themselves and their crony capitalist buds and promote the neo-con way.

24. If you're right...
...then our best hope is that their theft takes place at the nadir of their popularity, so that public reaction is strong and vigorous.

But I think the American public may just take it again. After all, half of voters wanted and supported the last theft.

5. I heard on CNN that Lt Gen William Boykin was asked...
to be there. He is rummy's under Secretary of defense for Intelligence who .....
(From the NYT):

Makes a practice of making speeches in uniform proclaiming that war on terrorism is Christian battle against Satan, that Muslims are idol worshippers and that only way to defeat terrorists is in 'name of Jesus'.

6. yikes
if Boykin is involved in this, that adds a whole other dimension, it connects the torture to the religious stuff, which leads right to Bush.

they knew what was going on

Oh we may still see what we saw in JAG but in the halls of Congress

What would be amazign is if Boykin commits perjury.

Who Turned This Idiot Loose?
by Bonnie Erbe

A two-year crusade of sorts by the Bush administration to mollify moderate Muslims and to try to defuse irrational hate of the West took a sudden and caroming turn last week. That happened when the news media reported Army Lt. Gen. William Boykin was telling church audiences full of evangelical Christians such as himself that the U.S. counter-terror war is a battle with "Satan."
(snip)

We in the army of God, in the house of God, kingdom of God have been raised for such a time as this," Boykin said last year.

14. He did not say he would testify....
They just said he would be asked. I believe there are hearings later in the week as well. Perhaps he will show up then. It certainly would give a whole new dynamic to the "torture scandal"!

10. So, not only are military but also pentagon employees being warned.
How can that newest "policy" be interpreted? Is it a "stay ignorant and uninformed" policy?

Weird.

He deserves a little recognition.

Very USSA, very, very. I'd like to see them try to enforce it.

25. Yes, you're right!
It's funny that it works out that way.

When the Republicans drug out all of the trascriptions of Monica Lewinsky's testimony, or the phone calls to Linda, or whatEVER it was that they published on the internet, and then in bookstores, if I'm not mistaken, they WANTED everyone to read every damned word.

I didn't have the least interest. I had already heard far more than I cared to hear on their rightwing newsdumps every night on tv.

(Remember their "breaking news" shots of the truck rolling up to Capitol Hill with guards staggering in with boxes and boxes of "evidence?" Oh, ha, ha, ha.)

Our right-wing is just goddawful. WHAT HAVE THEY EVER DONE RIGHT?

I'll bet there won't be ONE person who doesn't make sure he/she has seen these photos. They're far more significant than Monica Lewinsky's phone calls, or whatever.

26. The "I was out of the loop" defense...
They also may trot out the "There's enough blame to go around for everyone" if they think they can somehow tar the Democrats.

Republicans are even blaming Clinton. A right-wing torture-lover in on C-Span this morning filibustered for five minutes by about Clinton's penis, and a cigar.
