Those wispy streams of vapor that follow jetliners across the sky may not be as innocuous as they appear.

A new NASA study claims man-made cirrus clouds formed by commercial jet engine exhaust may be responsible for the increased surface temperatures detected in the United States between 1975 and 1994.

Humidity in the air determines how long contrails remain in the atmosphere. Persistent trails sometimes form large patches of fibrous clouds indistinguishable from natural cirrus, cirrocumulus or cirrostratus clouds, according to Malcolm Walker, of England's Royal Meteorological Society.

Contrails that persist for an extended period of time are most likely to affect the climate. Minnis has estimated that a contrail that begins as a thin gossamer line across the sky can spread to cover more than 20,000 square kilometers in just a few hours.

3. Interesting this is coming around again.
I've seen stories on this for at least 4 years now, maybe.

One thing that has been pointed at to back this theory up is in the days after September 11th, when all flights over the US were grounded, there was a 1 to 2 degree difference an average temp at some level (forgot specifics) - this was attributed to the absence of jet contrails.

In the first place, you did not see those "man made cirrus clouds" before about 1996.

In the second place, these fakes are NOT "indistinguishable from natural cirrus" clouds. The fakes are dirty off-white and decidedly two-dimensional when compared to real clouds. Natural cirrus clouds do not form long "weeping" tendrils that point downward.

In the third place, it ain't the engine exhaust that's causing these clouds. It's the chemicals (barium and aluminum for openers) that are being deliberately sprayed into the atmosphere by these white jets. Get yourself a decent pair of binoculars and watch the jets; they won't be too hard to find.

Sooner or later, you will see a plane with its "contrails" coming right off its horizontal stabilizers at the tail. You will see one plane leaving a "contrail" while a following plane at the same altitude leaves no trail. You may even see a plane leaving two "contrails" on one side and only one on the other--neat trick for a two-engine craft. You may also notice jets deliberately crossing flight paths, so as to make X's or even asterisks in the sky. Soon, more jets will spray across these original points and large, flat clouds will be generated.

NASA is taking up the "persistent contrails" meme that NOAA has been parroting for a couple of years--meaning that this business is arousing an uncomfortable level of suspicion.

These "man made cirrus clouds" are CHEMTRAILS. And the government is lying to us all at taxpayers' expense.

There must be information somewhere that would state how long a contrail, chemtrial could stay in the sky. I see them lasting all day spreading out and merging so to cover the whole sky.

At least this is what one American father found while paging through his child's science book. SmT was astonished to find seventh graders being taught about chemtrails. And geoengineeering their home planet.

Anyone with question about the "spray programs" he now says, "should perhaps just ask their kids."

The chemtrails section is found in the Centre Point Learning Science I Essential Interactions science book. Under "Solutions for Global Warming", section 5.19 features a photo of a big multi-engine jet sporting a familiar orange/red paint scheme.

The caption reads: "Figure 1- Jet engines running on richer fuel would add particles to the atmosphere to create a sunscreen".

The logo on the plane says: "Particle Air".

"I kid you not," SmT insists. "Why did I spend all of that time doing research when I could have just asked my kids?"

Helping habituate children to a life under lethal sunshine and "protective" spray planes, this trippy textbook urges young readers to "Use Sun Block". But its authors are referring to a sunscreen spread across the sky.

"Could we deliberately add particles to the atmosphere?" asks the text, before helpfully suggesting that "Burning coal adds soot to the air."

6. Some of those multiple contrails are caused by turbulence
Just about any jet under the right conditions will not only create engine exhuast trails, but will create smaller ones at the wing tips and other ends of the fuselage or control services.

I still haven't heard a rational explanation for why anyone would be intentially creating chemical contrails.

So, so true. I moved to Nashville from the Northeast in 1994. The following summer, my first return visit, I realized what was missing from the Middle Tennessee sky: cirrus clouds. They were extremely rare in the Nashville area at that time. Now, hardly a sunny day goes by without the man-made variety.

When I was a child, late '60s, early '70s, you could hold a hand up to the sky and contrails would appear no longer than your finger (perspective) before disolving. To see a trail that length, too, is a rarity now.

Shit.

I'm 43, and I remember seeing contrails in the sky ever since i was a small child. I can remember a "blooper-spotter" in National Enquirer from an episode of "Kung-Fu" where contrails were visible in the shot of what was supposed to be a late 1800's era western sky...and it's been a lot longer than just since 1996 that "Kung-Fu" was on the air.

38. I don't think I actually took pictures,
but I remember them from the time I was a small child, over 40 years ago, too. I may have a sunset pic or two from my youth that shows jet-made clouds.

Back then, we also used to watch for "sky writers", small plane pilots who'd write advertising messages with their exhaust...

I, too, have been seeing contrails in the sky since I was a small child, and I've got a least a decade on you. I am well aware of how they are formed and how they behave. What we have been seeing over the last seven or eight years are not contrails.

I beg to differ. I personally saw those trails turn into clouds in California in 1975. I was on a camping trip and it was the first time I noticed that the trails could turn into clouds. Where I live now it is cloudy most of the time so I never notice that phenomenon.

8. Saturday we were driving back from out of town
and approached the city, I began to notice a layer of high, thin clouds. There were lots of jet trails acroos the sky in all directions, and I immediately thought about chemtrails. It had been a blindingly clear day out at the lake where we had been, but over the city, it was hazy.

My husband even commented on it. He said, "Is there a front coming in?" I joked, "No, it's chemtrails." But really, it was eerie. The vapor was so think in the air that a dingy, sepia-tinted rainbow was visible on opposite sides of the sky as the sun got low. It was really weird.

Look at old war films of bombers over germany. The B17s were carrying chemicals not bombs. the intent was to lower the temperature over germany and freeze them out.

Come on, people. This just shows the lack of science background of americans.

The 'con' in 'contrail' stand for condensation. A contrail is nothing more than water vapor at high altitude and low temps. The hot engine exhaust condenses the water vapor and as the condensed droplets hit the cold air again they are turned into ice crystals. The size and length of the contrail depends on the temperature and humidity at altitude.

My goddess, if such a simple, fundamental process is not understood by the average citizen, we are doomed to become a nation of broom pushers and mop sloppers.

that's what I'm asking, how "LONG" can these ice crystals last. That's all. I haven't found the answer in any science book and I am looking. How long can ice crystals last that was my question.

Please don't be condescending to me I am a member of the National Honors Society and I did pass all my science classes.

If you don't have the proof like I asked just say so or give me the name of that jr. high science book

The exhaust from this single aircraft flying for less than 1 h in a moist atmosphere caused a cirrus cloud that eventually covered up to 4,000 km2 and lasted for more than 6 h. Other contrails and contrail clusters were observed to develop over periods of 7 to 17 h, spreading to cover areas of 12,000 to 35,000 km2. Such dispersed contrails are usually indistinguishable from natural cirrus; hence, satellite detection algorithms based on the linear structures of young contrails will not detect these dispersed contrails.

Who, and why?

If jets are indeed dumping chemicals into our atmosphere, surely there are some pilots or former pilots that know something fishy is going on. Even if they're not dumping anything, there has to be a reason why so many planes or jets or whatever fly in such patterns (+ and * and parallels). What are the pilots being told?

And, who's paying for this? Is some of the missing Pentagon money paying for this?

Is it possible that different types of fuels (if there are different types of fuels) cause different types of contrails? Is it possible that the passage of friction-warmed jet and plane wings in the cool air of the upper atmosphere could cause condensation that instantly cools into ice crystals, possibly dispersed by the speed of the plane or jet, similar to the way boats leave wakes across water?

And why?

Aircraft fly in assigned airspaces
Almost like highways in the air. They are kept seperated by 3 miles if at the same altitude, and by 1000 feet of altitude if crossing. Aircraft use radio signals for navigation. When they file a flight plan, it goes from VOR station to VOR station. In other words, and aircraft departing Miami in route to Atlanta will flight from Miami towards the Ft Myers VOR station, then towards north towards the Tampa VOR, then turn slight NW towards the Cross City VOR.....

If another aircraft is departing Tampa to Atlanta, he will wind up either following or leading the aircraft that departed Miami....

This is why you see most contrails in the US seemingly in the same place in the sky.

Another tidbit of info, aircraft flying north and west are assigned odd number altitudes, 29,000, 31,000, 33,000 feet, and aircraft fying south and east are assigned the even number altitudes.

NASA scientists have found that cirrus clouds, formed by contrails from aircraft engine exhaust, are capable of increasing average surface temperatures enough to account for a warming trend in the United States that occurred between 1975 and 1994.

According to Patrick Minnis, a senior research scientist at NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., there has been a one percent per decade increase in cirrus cloud cover over the United States, likely due to air traffic. Cirrus clouds exert a warming influence on the surface by allowing most of the Sun’s rays to pass through but then trapping some of the resulting heat emitted by the surface and lower atmosphere.

Using a general circulation model, Minnis estimates that cirrus clouds from contrails increased the temperatures of the lower atmosphere by anywhere from 0.36 to 0.54°F per decade. Minnis’s results show good agreement with weather service data, which reveal that the temperature of the surface and lower atmosphere rose by almost 0.5°F per decade between 1975 and 1994.

About chemtrails, I don't know what to think. I do know that in recent years, I've seen persistant cross-hatchings in the sky that weren't there before. What I'm seeing, I don't know enough to say. But it makes me uneasy.
