Brazil Calls NY Times Alcohol Story 'Slander'
Brazil Calls NY Times Alcohol Story 'Slander'

BRASILIA, Brazil (Reuters) - Brazil on Sunday condemned as slanderous a New York Times article about the drinking habits of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

"The Brazilian government will study the appropriate measures to defend the honor of the president of the republic and the image of Brazil overseas," presidential spokesman Andre Singer said in a statement.

The article in the Sunday New York Times said "some of his countrymen have begun wondering if their president's predilection for strong drink is affecting his performance in office."

But Singer said Lula's social habits were "moderate and not at all different from those of the average Brazilian citizen."

to cover our own pResident's chronic inebriation, which is obvious every day this sot clings to the podium, red-faced and blossom-nosed, slurring his incoherent words of nonsense.

I don't need to wonder if our own "pResident's predilection for strong drink is affecting his performance in office." I KNOW it does.

3. this is so typical of NYTimes
when some country or leader DARES to stand up to the US and refuses to toe the US-imposed and NY Times-approved neoliberal policies, the Times, rather than actually addressing the real issues, resorts to this kind of personal slander.

NY Times is not much better than Fox News...

5. yes, this is just one bullet in the war the neoliberals fight against...
...."socialism".

If Lula even comes close to making good on his campaign promises, the NY Times and other neoliberal puppets will unleash an onslaught of propaganda against Brazil.

4. Lulu is clearly to 'socialistic' for the US.
We will take aim at him and begin to destablize his regime just as we have done in Venuzuela.
