National Guard Unit Heads For Cuba (Guantanamo)

-- Soldiers from the 169th Military Police Company left from the Warren armory. They will be posted at the prison at Guantanamo Bay, where prisoners are being kept in the war on terror.

The soldiers will stay in Cuba for one year.

Alabama Guard Unit Deploys To Cuba


Another Alabama National Guard unit has been called to active military duty but they're not heading overseas to Iraq.

130 members of the 217th Military Police Company in Prattville are en route to the United States military base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba to guard Al-Quaida prisoners.

The unit deploys today...less than a month after returning an eleven month stint guarding military bases in Georgia.

The unit's members are primarily law enforcement officers, --

2. We've frequently seen advertisements...
about employers keeping jobs open for National Guard members. Is there any law that requires that? If not, are the Guard members likely screwed when they get back from a YEAR of duty? (And on the other hand, are the employers screwed if their employees go away for a year and then get to demand their positions back?)

5. Don't know about laws
But many unions have negotiated the provisions you speak of. I know the UAW/Ford collective bargaining contract has it for sure as I have read it.

4. Rotation, attrition, transfer to Iran, etc.
Most likely their presense is required elsewhere. Darth Rumeister has gotten our nation's military services totally FUBAR.
