Southern Baptists Hear Proposal to Pull Children From Public Schools

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A prominent Southern Baptist is asking the national convention to consider a resolution recommending parents remove their children from what he calls "godless" and "anti-Christian" public schools.

The resolution, co-authored by T.C. Pinckney, publisher of a Baptist newsletter in Alexandria, Va., urges parents to homeschool their children or send them to Christian schools.

"God gives the responsibility for education of children to the parents, not to the government," Pinckney said in an interview Thursday. "And parents should be taking responsibility, primarily through homeschooling."

His proposal has been submitted to the convention's 10-member Resolutions Committee, which will decide whether to present it for a vote when the convention meets June 15-16 in Indianapolis.

I watched a program on A&E last night about a Baptist preacher who home-schooled his kids. Problem was, by keeping them out of sight he was able to beat, torture and rape his adopted daughter.

Part of public schooling includes interaction with other people and ideas - home-schooling sucks in this regard, and unfortunately has a habit of being abused.

I've also met a few religious home-schooled types, and it amazes me that these people can even function in modern society...but no one ever said ignorance and/or stupidity is against the law.

astronomy, biology (non fundie style), chemistry, history, psychology, sociology, chemistry, physics, mathematics (separate from simple arithmetic), industrial arts (where's your hazmat certificate?), band, phys-ed (quick, what does the trapezius do?), business, voice, econonics (besides trickle-down), French, Greek, Latin, German, Italian...?

Firstly most schools aren't qualified to teach all those things. My school only taught french as a foreign lang. and my sisters' school only taught spanish. Astronomy, psych, sociology, economics were barely taught - some in basic science classes or general social sciences.

Many parents haven't studied any of those things since they got out of school, and have forgotten half of it. They would have to refresh/continue their own educations AND teach their kids how to teach themselves.

I don't know how homeschooling goes in regard to accreditation, do these kids do any kind of testing? Or they just show up at 17 and hope to pass a GED?

I always thought that was a load of crap until I actually met someone who had been homeschooled her whole life. Very nice girl, very intelligent, but it's painful to watch her in social settings. She's not shy, but she's lacking a certain something that most people seem to get in high school. And she's only just now learning to not take everything her mother says for granted.

Children need to be in either school or some homeschool organization that allows them to spend most of the day with other people their age.

They start by pulling their kids out of school.

They then go to school board meetings demanding that prayer be added to the curriculum, teaching evolution be dropped in favor of the teaching of "intelligent design," Bible readings be forced upon all children or whatever in hell they're asking for this time.

The next step is to run for school board.

At which point someone should stand up and say something to the effect of "if you're so interested in what children are being taught in the schools, why aren't any of your children enrolled?" That, unfortunately, never happens.

Rushdoony was the founder of "homeschooling" actually, and since then, the movement has taken off to those not involved with the REconstructionist movement, and parents who are dissatisfied with the public school system, that does not give their gifted child the utmost, and does not meet their expectations for their gifted child, have adopted.

We , on DU should be aware of Rushdoony and his Reconstructionist philosphy.

Public education is a target of religious nuts. It is also much maligned by parents who think their precious, unique child needs to be recognized as a genius, and if he or she is not, they will pull their child from the school, complain about the teachers who do not recognize the genius in their child, and insist they be given tax payer vouchers in order that their little geniuses be recognized as such--in their own homes, by their own parents. !! LOL

They do not like it that multi culturism, and tolerance is taught either.

They want their children to learn "Christian" concepts, including the notion that the theory of evolution is bunk.

Whatever works, I guess. They are serious Christians but I think it could also be that sending the kids to private school would be $40+K per year. If he is willing and able to do it, they can certainly get some help for any areas they want help in.

my two youngest great nephews, but for the opposite reason. She feels that the schools have been so overtaken by fundamentalist elements, that they are not getting a quality education.

I talked to her oldest, who goes to public high school, and he is a bright, polite, very, very intelligent young man. His complaint is that the schools try so hard to impose uniform thought, that they are getting kids to memorize things, but not to think critically. I am very proud of all of them.

I have nothing against private schools and home-schooling per se, but I object to my tax money being pulled out of the public school system in order to support non-public education. All that does is re-segregate education along religious and class lines, and make the decay of public education into a self-fulfilling prophecy.

In my home town, private schools take one of two tracks. They either play in the so-called "TAPS" league (Texas Association of Private Schools) or they petition public schools for the right to participate in team sports. Believe it or not, they actually went to court and prevailed so that their young un's can play for the home team. Most, however, take the Taps route because the competition is far less strenous and their kids have more of an opportunity to be stars. Little Joey is much more apt to get court time and make a few buckets if there are no public school athletes around.

He knows full well most people can't afford to put their kids in private schools or have one parent quit their job to homeschool them. They can pass all the resolutions they want, but only a few well be able to do this. Most of the ones who can are probably already doing that.

Of course, if they do pass this resolution, the next step will be to lobby congress to get school vouchers approved.
