Cable Critics Blast 'Gore TV'
http://www.reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=televisionNews&storyID=5053883§ion=news

NEW ORLEANS (Hollywood Reporter) - Now that Al Gore has officially made his cable connection, the industry is questioning his grasp of the realities of the cable business.

The former vice president's surprise appearance Tuesday at the National Cable & Telecommunications Assn. (NCTA) convention to announce that he and a group of investors have acquired NewsWorld International news channel from Vivendi Universal was all the buzz among operators and other NCTA attendees.

Still, many at the convention dismissed as quixotic the Gore group's bid to restyle the modestly distributed digital cable/satellite channel as an "independent voice" for the MTV demo.

"This will be the biggest flop liberals have seen since Hillary Clinton's health care plan," remarked a cable executive who wished to remain anonymous.

Gee, with comments like that I wonder if the anonymous cable executive has a particular political tilt?

"blast" something that doesn't even exist yet? The sale was announced yesterday! At least wait for some programming to make it to the air before giving your "unbiased" opinion. :eyes:

6. "Cable critics" - how about "right wingers"?
The article headline would be quite different if the person buying it were a right winger and the people whining were on the left.

8. No bias in this article....
Feeding fears that the channel will provide a liberal soapbox were Gore's investors, a who's who of Democrat fund-raisers including Joel Hyatt, CEO of the channel's holding company, INdTV Holdings. Others read Gore's emphasis on the word "alternative" as code for left-wing flavoring.

"Fears"? :(

have the disaster in healthcare we have today. But Republicans are simply far too stupid to grasp this.

12. These are the same morons who thought CNN wouldn't work
"A cable news network? It won't last five minutes!"

It's not just that these guys at the top are right wing yahoos - - they're totally noncreative morons who wouldn't recognize a good idea if it walked up and bit them in the azmuth.

13. Oh c'mon,
everybody knows that cable executives are libruls and are part of the insidious librul media. They're probably just worried that Gore's new channel will compete with them for the librul television viewing audience.

14. It will need "star power"....
Corny thing to say, but true. And no problem either- for every Dennis Miller there are one hundred Als and Jeneannes...

It does not necessarily have to be "Liberal"- it can be "alternative"...

If he gets the right people doing it, it could work...

I hope his "flop" is as impressive as Air America's "flop."

Actually I don't understand the demographic as well.

I think a liberal version of Faux would do well. I don't understand politcal targeting towards this age group.

18. Funny last paragraph
<snip>

Carl Vogel, president and CEO of Charter Communications, certainly didn't seem concerned about any potential political or ideological slant. "Hey, we carry Rupert (Murdoch's) stuff," he remarked.

EXCELLENT!! Let 'em whine! I hope it scares the little weasels shi*less! Poor babies - feeling threatened and all self-defensive by one little Gore network amongst all their hundreds of reich-wingnut ones?

What a bunch of ninnies. HA!

20. Is this Gore not getting mad but getting even?
Oh, dear. A sudden televised swing to the radical politics of the center. Gasp.

Seriously, couldn't you just see TR striding right into the WH, stomping into the oval office and kicking the living shit out of a screaming *?

Feverous fantasies aside, what might this channel look like? Who would be the on-air staff? I'm anxious to find out. Even with it's problems, AAR has been a blast. But, a suggestion of MTV leaves me cold. I would hope that there would be more substance, at least part of the time. How about a new Sixty Minutes? Documentaries at night. set aside at least an hour a day for foreign-sourced news reports. Stuff like dat.

whiners with crabs in a barrel mentality.

What are they afraid of? The TRUTH getting out, maybe? Them being discovered for the lying shills they are?

Well, now we will be able to get the unfiltered 'other side' of the story.

O'Liely, yesterday, was waxing hysterical yet again over something that had his panties in a bunch and he actually said something to the effect of "well, their side.... you know what? Who cares about their side?" Uh, responsible journalists who've learned the proper techniques for reporting on a story in an unbiased fashion, as the media is SUPPOSED TO BE. If truth is on his side, why is he afraid of what the other side has to say?

O'Liely is such a "mouffi ou moufflarge"...

24. I guess they
are threatened. The fact that people are seeing through the stranglehold corporations have over the media and the way they are using it to spread lies and blatant propaganda and then actually DOING something about it has them VERY uncomfortable. Its interesting how the snotty "executive" is anonymous. Screw them!
