Nethercutt objects to ads on bases

By NICHOLAS K. GERANIOS
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

SPOKANE, Wash. -- Even a pro-business Republican like U.S. Rep. George Nethercutt was outraged Wednesday by a Major League Baseball plan to sell advertising space on bases.

Nethercutt, R-Wash., a former part-owner of the Greensboro Bats and the Michigan Battle Cats minor league teams, sent a letter to baseball commissioner Bud Selig protesting the decision.

"For decades, fans have tolerated advertisements that encroach closer and closer to the baseball diamond, but to put ads on the actual bases goes one step too far," wrote Nethercutt, a candidate for U.S. Senate.

"Little leaguers deserve to see their heroes slide into bases, not ads," added Nethercutt, who represents the Spokane area. "As a former minor-league baseball team owner myself, I believe such aggressive advertising undermines the character of America's pastime at every level."

1. It's time for the politicians to join in
They should wear patches on their clothes announcing their corporate sponsors, like NASCAR drivers or most recently, jockeys. Hey, it's only fair! Those corporations pay lots of good money for their politicians. They may as well get some advertising in as well.

* better buy some bigger suit jackets. What logo does Satan use again? :P

2. Not a bad idea, actually.
Make a law that a patch must be worn for every corporate contribution of say $1000 or more. The more the contribution, the bigger the patch. Just like NASCAR. I'd like to know what corporations have bought my politicians. It would help explain their votes.

Maybe some talented web saavy person could start a database with pics of our national politicians already "dressed up".

3. Nethercutt R-Wash.
is doing a good job of keeping his name in the Wash.State press. Name recognation is a vote getter. What next in his drive to gain name recognation in Western Washington?
