U.S. apologizes to abused prisoners

Some interrogation techniques to be discontinued, general says

JIM KRANE
ASSOCIATED PRESS
May. 5, 2004. 05:02 PM

ABU GHRAIB - The commander of U.S.-run prisons in Iraq apologized today for the abuse of prisoners by American guards and said he will invite observers from the Red Cross and Iraqi government into Abu Ghraib prison.

/snip/

Miller, former commander of the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, said he would halt or restrict some interrogation methods, especially eight to 10 "very aggressive techniques."

Those include hooding, stress positioning and sleep deprivation, which he said are now banned without specific approval.

:wtf: "without specific approval" - THAT's comforting!

/snip/

Prison authorities did not allow the journalists to speak to or photograph detainees.

/end/ . . . MORE

now THAT tells us how "open" the US is going to be about all of this

1. But Shrub won't and neither will Rumdum

Bush dismissed, however, any implication that Americans were no better in their treatment of prisoners than Saddam.

"A dictator wouldn't be answering questions about this," he told Al-Arabiya.

Bush's interviewers did not ask him whether he thought an apology was appropriate, and Bush did not offer one.

But his spokesman used the word "sorry" a half-dozen times.

"We've already said that we're sorry for what occurred, and we're deeply sorry to the families and what they must be feeling and going through as well," McClellan said. "The president is sorry for what occurred and the pain it has caused."

Asked why Bush himself had not apologized, McClellan said: "I'm saying it now for him."
