Blasts overshadow Olympic countdown

Just 100 days before the start of the Athens Olympic Games, three bombs exploded outside an Athens police station yesterday, raising new security concerns. A police spokesman said the three time bombs, which were preceded by an anonymous telephone warning, badly damaged the station in the central Athens district of Kalithea and slightly injured one policeman.

Kalithea is near hotels to be used by Olympic officials during the August 13-29 Games. Fears have been running high that the Olympics could be a target of violence and security forces have been put on high alert.

The Greek Government said it had no indication that the blasts were linked to the Games. The Prime Minister, Costas Karamanlis, described the blasts as an isolated incident which did not affect in any way the country's preparations for the safety of the Olympics. The three blasts occurred within 45 minutes of an anonymous telephone warning to an Athens newspaper, police said.
