Iraqi Families to Seek Compensation in UK for Civilian Deaths

LONDON (AP) - British lawyers say they will file papers in court Wednesday on behalf of several families seeking compensation for the deaths of civilian relatives in Iraq.

Human rights lawyer Phil Shiner, who is representing 14 Iraqi families, said the deaths all occurred after the end of the main conflict and included people shot by British soldiers in their homes or while driving.

"We say that all of these people were just going about their normal everyday business, eating their dinners and whatever," Shiner told British Broadcasting Corp. radio.

Shiner, of Birmingham-based Public Interest Lawyers, said he will present papers to the High Court in London Wednesday, calling for an urgent judicial review to establish whether the British forces operating in Iraq were subject to the European Convention on Human Rights in relation to the deaths.
