MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota (CNN) -- The House of Bishops voted Tuesday evening to confirm the Rev. Gene Robinson as bishop of New Hampshire, making him the first openly gay bishop in the Episcopal Church's history.

Robinson needed a simple majority of the 106 votes to be confirmed. He received 62.

A date will be set for his consecration.

3. Good
I'm glad that bogus "11th hour misconduct charge" don't hold up. Good for him, and I hope he goes on to serve the church and the community well.

6. Now that this "issue" is done...
maybe healing can start, at lease for those who opposed Bishop Robinson. I feel cofident the large majority of Episcopalians will not leave over this issue.

8. I could not be happier
for NH's new bishop. Sometimes my state surprises me pleasantly, and this is one of those times.

I grew up Episcopalian, and while I have no intention of going back, I congratulate them on being more forward thinking than most other organized religions.

Bravo, Reverand Robinson!!

15. Don't ya know that you can catch AIDS from just touching a gay person!
Investigators questioned Lewis and determined Robinson touched his arm and back momentarily during conversation in a public room with more than 300 people present.

I suspected this was a fictitious charge and a smear when the day the allegation was made public I saw some puke from Gary Bauer's Family Research Council make the TV rounds decrying the assault on family values by radical homosexuals (I am paraphrasing).

A hand shake and a pat on the back makes one suspect of unwanted sexual advances, if that's the standard, then I know of no politician that is not guilty of this (including Republicans).

19. A Brief Cautionary Word
While I applaud the decision, I have a deep concern about the consequences to the church over the near and long term. As teh article stated, the vote was far from unanimous, a rare event for voting to approve bishops. I hope and pray that this will not cause a schism, but it could happen.

It saddens me that issues of sexuality have for so long caused such pain and division it every Christian denomination, particularly since it is so contrary to the Gospel, and what is required of Christians as servants of god. We should keep in mind that while this is a good and joyful thing for many, it is also a source of pain and separation for many others.

Peace

22. I see what you mean, but
I'd rather the church be split than to unite against gays. This is much like the 1960s. Today, to most people, racism seems archaic, though unfortunately still widespread. I hope that as time passes, the same majority acceptance will happen with homosexuals. Whether that will come true depends a lot on church leadership. The confirmation of this bishop is a step in the right direction.

23. Good for them!

I predict lots and lots of new church attendees. Christianity is about love for our fellow man and woman. Helping each other and finding community. I just love it when the good guys win! (And I like it even more when those hate worshipping turds lose.)

24. My late 'mother-in-law' would be so proud!
My partner and his mother are / were Episcopalian. I've always admired these devoted parishoners...and the Anglican Church whenever I've visited friends in the UK.

So, with Gene Robinson being ordained as Bishop for the folks in New Hampshire...well, it is very special, indeed.

Maybe, this old heathen (me) will finally just start attending church again. Just maybe.
