US: Syria due for new sanctions, probably in May

1 hour, 18 minutes ago Add Politics - AFP to My Yahoo!

WASHINGTON (AFP) - New US sanctions against Syria are "inevitable" and will likely be applied sometime this month, assistant secretary of state Richard Armitage said.

US agencies have discussed "various aspects" of the Syria Accountability Act, signed into law by US President George W. Bush (news - web sites) in December, Armitage told the United States' Arabic television channel Al Hurra.

"And it will come in the not-too-distant future. It's inevitable," he said, adding that it could be applied "probably this month."

On Friday, the White House said that implementation of sanctions was imminent, based on Syria's ties to terrorists; tacit support for insurgents in Iraq; and efforts to obtain weapons of mass destruction.

1. I'll go ahead and say it . . .
(given the torture news) by what right does the U.S. have to demand "accountability" from any country other than our own?

Where's the "United States Accountability Act"?

2. Sideshow is the next show
All the justifications and timing are pitiful cover(we've been there before unfortunately) for the failure in Iraq and the NEXT step in the non stop agenda that has bogged down. Syria may be next but none of these reasons for sanctions are rational. If you believe Syria has heightened it's aggressive profile since Iraq you'd have to believe they are more insane or stupid than a million Husseins of George W. himself.

Yet, here we have the same uncritical, unheralded, unopposed march to another war or at least another aggression with NO, absolutely no critical news worthy of the name from the people passing on the WH slurry to the ignorant masses.

Syria is the next weakest sister in the great agenda, but to pretend that would an easy military victory and "reconstruction" is insane beyond the belief of even the worst fanatics. If it is a bluff it might be called, but with what? Syria is probably just hunkered down trying to avoid provocations of which many border incursions by us(preps for possible invasion?) are the worst.

And they shouldn't even breathe the word WMD without shame. Israel is still the only credible source in the region and, I suspect, if Sharon was making any deals worth keeping, Israel may yet assist W in finding some convenient WMD's in Iraq.

The only way out(and jumpstart the Agenda) for Bush and Sharon is another great action/response event, some great justification or act of terror. They must pray to their god for it daily but they may not wait for the little guy terrorists to take the hint.

3. yeah, this admin is one to talk about human rights, etc
riiiight. :eyes:

The big problem now is that the US' credibility is shot on the international scale because of all these christian zealots wanting to bring on armageddon.

How long will it be before the UN imposes sanctions on the US?

9. The elitist attitude should really pull in the voters.
-sarcasm-

Do you really think Kerry can get elected without the people you derisively refer to as "Joe six pack"??

10. I have to agree with you on that one, demdave.
Every American citizen DESERVES to be informed about his/her government's intentions and, frankly, every American citizen should be able to trust that his/her government is honest.

NO American citizen deserves to have his/her loyalty and trust manipulated by lies and propaganda.

6. Well, most of the hijackers were Syrian.
And Syria hid Saddam's stockpiles of chemical and biological and nuclear weapons. Plus, Syria has drones capable of flying to the US and launching chemical attacks on us within 45 minutes. And don't forget how they tried to buy yellowcake from Niger.

You people all hate freedom so much.
