Old general veeping up

Old general veeping up
By JAMES GORDON MEEK
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

WASHINGTON - Retired Gen. Wesley Clark's stock in the Democratic veepstakes is rising again, a new report says.
Sen. John Kerry's campaign believes Clark would be a big plus in its bid to convince voters that a Democratic White House would be just as tough on security issues as Republicans.

Also on Kerry's short list are Rep. Dick Gephardt (D-Mo.), Sen. John Edwards (D-N.C.) and Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack, Newsweek reported.

1. Go Clark! Go Clark! Go Clark! Well, I don't really know Vilsack
and I like Edwards (except that we would get 2 Washington insiders) but I am so impressed by Clark's intelligence, honesty, speaking ability, and... good looks (I am sorry, but being a female I AM impressed by male looks).

39. Don't get it over with already...
there's much more coverage if you stretch out the decision. Keep milking the drama for all its worth. Let all the candidates grandstand about why they would be the best. Let others criticize. Let the cameras roll and let the debates heat up.

5. I'd rater see Clark as Sec. of Defense
...Edwards as VP, Gephardt as Sec. of Labor. Of course, Edwards would also make a fabulous AG, can you imagine him going after the Bush criminals? Heh, and inmagine Clark going after the neocons infesting the Pentagon, the cretins who forced him out.

Either Clark or Edwards would "balance" the ticket, although balancing the ticket with an educated and intelligent southerner won't impress any of the idiots out there.

Vilsack and Gephardt, while both good men, won't balance the ticket. I doubt either of them could swing NC, Tenn, or Louisiana, all of which are really up for grabs, thanks to Bush bungling on the economy.
Edwards on the ticket would have a good chance of delivering those states, Clark a fair chance.

13. I'm sorry, but
Clark is not eligible to serve as Secretary of Defense. He hasn't been out of the military long enough.

Apart from that, I think that Clark would be by far the strongest pick for VP, and I am glad that they are giving him serious consideration.

14. Can't. Sec'y of State, maybe
I'd think somebody with over a thousand posts would have noted one of the many, many times it's been pointed out that Clark can't be Sec'y of Defence because he hasn't been out of the military long enough (has to have been out for 10 years or more).

I'd think that, but I'd be wrong - thereby proving my hubby's assertion that I am not, in fact, always right. Damn you! Of course, I don't have to tell him... ;-)

Seriously, I think he'd make a GREAT V.P., and would certainly help the ticket. But I also think it's true that his skills (not to mention his diplomatic contacts) would be better used as Sec'y of State.

40. Um...Clark ran Southern Command...Columbia? Haiti? Venezuala?
The US military has some serious human rights issues in our own hemisphere disguised as the war on drugs.

The increased militarization of the White House would be a tragedy despite Clark's noble campaign words.

Some of Europe would be confident in Clark's proclaimed multilateralism but the rest of the world would rightfully dread another representative of US brute force in the White House.

The Crusades must end.

:bounce: O8)DO IT, KERRY!! DO IT!!! That's the winning ticket!!O8) :bounce:

That is the ticket that will do the job, domestically and internationally!! There would be NO WAY to stop these two!!

The synergy between the two would be INCREDIBLY dynamic, charismatic, and STABILIZING for the nation.

KERRY -- LISTEN UP!!! Put Wesley Clark in the VP slot, and get Eliot Spitzer for Atty General!!

ELIOT SPITZER HAS TO BE ATTY. GENERAL!!!! That would put an END to the corruption and corporate take-over that has come to characterize this country!!! Eliot Spitzer would take down the corruption in short order. Mark my words!!

Edwards can go in the cabinet somewhere, but he's not even in the same legal league with Eliot Spitzer. We don't need good looks in the Atty. General's office....we need a proven legal ass-kicker. Spitzer would have the entire bush crime family doing a perp walk.

Elliot Spitzer is terrific, and he's no slouch in the good looks department. Seasoned and tough, he is the obvious pick for AG, IMO.

Even though I want Wes Clark for VP, in my heart I know he would be a terrific Sec. of State and would do that job with aplomb. The VP office can sometimes just be window dressing. Only if the VP has added powers given him by the P, do I want Wes to be VP.

21. Kerry has the luxury of waiting
to see how the campaign shakes out.

If it leans toward national security - Clark.
If it moves toward the economy - Edwards.

If we need Missouri or Iowa - Vilsak, Gephardt.

Or maybe even someone else, depending. It's a long way to the convention!

45. I prefer Clark myself
but I do think Edwards is a better campaigner. Edwards really focused on domestic issues on the campaign trail and is better known for that than Clark. Most people don't know Clark taught economics. Kerry has said that he wants a VP who could step right in and handle national security - that would definitely fit more Clark's resume. In the end it's going to come to votes - who Kerry thinks can get more votes for him.

Really, Edwards or Clark is a win - win. I could be enthusiastic about either.

While Chimpy and unka Dick are tag teaming every swing state in the union, Kerry is one at a timing it. He needs someone to help him take on the battle and he needs someone charismatic now. If Clark is that man, bring him on now, don't wait.

50. Bush just spent two months and 60 million dollars
trying to define Kerry - and he has failed to make any headway in those swing states. Now Kerry has the money to fight back - to start running ads defining himself. He really needs the focus to be on himself right now - not the distraction of a running mate.

22. What about Gov. Richardson (NM)?
He'd go a long way in shoring up the hispanic vote, which the Republicans are obviously after. I don't know if he would be my top choice, but he ought to be a serious contender.

I would be reasonably happy with Clark, and it would make a lot of sense strategically since he could help out 1) with the South and 2) with the crowd that thinks Dems are all wussies. I think I like Edwards more though...he's got the charisma that Kerry often times lacks.

53. Kerry Isn't "Military" And Clark Transcends That Label Entirely
Kerry was a Prosecutor and Senator... how does that become "military"? Cause he served in Viet Nam?

Clark may have been career Military but his role included, Diplomat and Governorship of many thousand NATO troops and their loved ones.

He has also advised Congress and the Courts on issues such as Education & Affirmative Action.

He also understands Macroeconomics.

51. Isn't there the small matter
of the "official" nomination at the convention before the running mate and cabinet is finally selected?

68. Wow finally a post that brings a smile to my face!
The news has been utterly depressing around here lately.

This is such a nice change!

I hope that Kerry sees what the rest of us see in Wes!

72. A Kerry/Clark ticket would be unbeatable...
It shouldn't be an issue that this administration's failures has lead to the deaths of hundreds of American civilians and soldiers. But why does Kerry get lower marks on national security than does Bush? Another poll shows that 80% of the voters would not change the way they voted during another terrorist attack. But 10% would change their preference if such a massive attack occurred outside the country, another 10% would be swayed only if it occurred in this country.

73. Terrific
I'm happy to hear that General Clark is being seriously considered for the vice presidency. I was somewhat critical of him during the primaries, but now I understand what an asset he is to our party; Kerry/Clark would be an outstanding ticket.

74. A Winning Ticket
Though I had been reticent about posting my interest in Clark during the primaries I now know it is time to "come out." These two together could go a long way toward restoring respect for American values around the world.

Kerry-Clark in '04!:bounce:
