New virus snarls thousands of computers

By ANICK JESDANUN
AP INTERNET WRITER

NEW YORK -- An Internet worm that takes advantage of a known flaw with the Windows operating system raced around the world Monday, snarling tens of thousands of computers and causing Internet traffic to slow.

Though Microsoft Corp. had announced the flaw with the so-called Local Security Authority Subsystem Service last month, many computer owners had yet to apply the fix that the company had released.

Unlike most outbreaks, the Sasser worm does not require users to activate it by clicking on an e-mail attachment. Sasser is known as a network worm because it can automatically scan the Internet for computers with the security flaw and send a copy of itself there.

4. Here's the latest
The help desk has installed something called a Windows 2000 Hotfix. Seems to be working okay--I can get anywhere on the Internet, but not on the company's Intranet--ask me if I care, LOL!

5. I don't know about that
Took me a whole day to recover from one of the patches for this virus. F***ed things up big time.

Don't know if I'm protected now or not. I say if you're going to upgrade anything, upgrade to Linux or Mac, otherwise it's just the same shit, only more money.
