Nancy puts the kibosh on Ronald Reagan University
http://www.cnn.com/2004/EDUCATION/04/30/reagan.university.ap/index.html

<snip>

Federal law gives former presidents or their spouses final say over the use of the president's name as long as either is alive, said Terry Walker, the founding president of the university.

The rejection was a shock, Walker said.

<snip>

Don't worry, Terry, if you want to go ahead with your cockamamie scheme, just remember that the old bag isn't going to live forever.

2. Nancy is surprisingly reasonable, IMO.
She also put the brakes on the Reagan dime.

My overall opinion still hasn't changed, though. It's just that she's been surprisingly . . . reasonable.

9. She's not reasonable, she's pissed.
They're refusing to do stem cell research and letting ol' Ronnie die, while attempting to whore out his name for every conceivable purpose.

I'd tell them where to stick it too, if I was her. The stem cell thing is total politics, and that's more important to them than whether Reagan could benefit from stem cell research. I know they are salivating for the day when Ronnie dies so they can have him canonized.

What a bitter lesson Nancy has had to learn about politics. Unfortunately Ronnie is oblivious to it all. He could benefit from it too, but it's hardest on the families, I think, just like the families of all the PWAs that he let die while playing politics with their lives. Whew, karma is a bitch.

4. Well....
whatdayaknow? Nancy sure is keeping restraint on Raygun's legacy. Her feet are more firmly on the ground than most spouses--try comparing this to what Babs will try to do for Poppy and Jr. down the line.

5. Nancy is a special case...

She's taking care of a man with Alzheimer's. That can put a lot of things into perspective. I would guess that politics is the least of her concerns right now.

6. Thanks Nancy
What a godawful ghastly idea. So Orwellian - a university named for Reagan. the ultimate irony and sign of intellectual and moral rot and decadence. Reagan's a good piece of the reason we are in this mess right now. The stolen election of 1980 has had disastrous consequences.

8. Nancy Reagan is above all, loyal to her husband.
She never was the hero the wingnuts made her out to be nor the ogre some Demorats thought her to be. I think we should leave politicians' spouses alone unless they inject themselves into the political arena, then they can defend themselves.

10. The SHOWTIME movie special Reagan biography was ANTI-Republican..
Edited on Mon May-03-04 10:48 AM by Tellurian
and the reason why they didn't want it shown on mainstream tv..

After watching the movie, which was incidentally produced by Barbra Streisand, Streisand's husband, James Brolin, staring as RR...depicted Reagan as being blindsided by the powerful takeover of the Bush Vice Presidency, with Nancy watching out for Ronnie in the final days of his term. This points up the notion about Bush's involvement in the much talked about conspiracy of the Hinkley assassination attempt on Reagan's life.

Sketchy details marking the friendship between Jeb and Hinkley ending in the resulting assassination attempt. Speculating Bush wanted a leg up to presidential power because of the fear of losing to the oncoming Clinton challenge.

Incidentaly, after viewing the movie. My opinion of Nancy Reagan changed drammatically. I like Nancy for who she was and what she did for her husband. The Right Wing turned against her when she stood in their way of the Iran-Contra involvement and proceeded to demonize her as a cold, uncaring, self absorbed witch, until Reagan left office.

Which as the movie proved, she was only looking out for her husband's best interests, because she realized Bush had usurped Reagan's power.
