Air America off the air permanently on WNTD
By Ted Cox Daily Herald TV/Radio Columnist
Posted Saturday, May 01, 2004

Liberal-oriented Air America Radio went off the air again in Chicago at noon Friday - this time apparently for good on WNTD 950-AM.

Air America and 'NTD owner Multicultural Radio Broadcasting are involved in a dispute over the network's deal to lease the station.

MRB says Air America bounced checks; Air America insists it stopped payment on the checks over MRB's attempt to both sell the network time and charge for programming on KBLA-AM in Los Angeles in the weeks before the network even went on the air a month ago.

Looks like their out of Chicago for good. No more good frequencies.

2. Butdoes streaming generate any revenue for them? Money is the bottom line
and if they can't make a profit they will be off the air everywhere. I wonder why they don't have some advertisements on their web page - something like Drudge has. He gets paid everytime somebody clicks on his sponsors.

4. Advertising
...done at the national level, provides the revenue. If you listen to KPOJ online, they blank local ads, run the national ads. So yes, they can make money through streaming. All they have to do is tell the advertisers how many listeners they are delivering on the net at various times of the day.

7. i'm sure they add it to their viability and demographics reports.
those are numbers of listeners which equals power base. it's not a matter of having a market or making money. they have a market and can stand to make lotsa money. i think it's whether the deep pockets of the neo cons will block them from coming onto the radio scene.

5. Its time to develop a portable web stream radio.
Tell all of your techie friends to get to work on this one. They want to silence our voice. We need a new radio that can recieve web streaming and that would be affordable. Everyone would want one and one percent of the profits could go to funding progressive radio. That is similiar to what Pacifica did in it's early days. It actually gave out radios that could recieve FM. Lets figure out a way to secure some airwaves for ourself.

8. Someone has invented something like what you are talking about!!
British start-up Reciva is currently pitching its standalone Net radio receiver to a variety of consumer electronics companies, ISPs and network providers, while Cisco's WLAN subsidiary, Linksys, is preparing a new version of its Wireless B Media Adaptor that can pump your favourite online stations into your living room.

Maybe Air America should be running ads for these boxes? The could get paid for the ads and also help sell the product to consumers!

17. Yuck, get a Sirius Sat. radio instead
I can't imagine that thing trying to find one out of millions of internet streams. If it is a standalone product, it'd just about have to costas much and have the power of a laptop.

15. NO, NO, NO!!! You are assuming an access that does not exist.
In my humble opinion, it would be unrealistic to assume that mainstream America has access to such technology. Frankly, that kind of assumption would be just plain foolish and dumb.

Real radio is the ONLY way to go and REAL people are starving for progressive thoughts, ideas and inspiration.

Going "tech" would be a HUGE mistake because it precludes the majority of our population.

6. We have had this happen to us in Los Angeles
and I do miss it. The transmission from KBLA really did suck, it sounded awful

Air America claims to have 30 million dollars in the bank at this point of time to keep it running for two years without any revenue what-so-ever. Multicultural Radio Broadcasting are the people with the problem, just watch.

11. Yes, the drought continues here in L.A. AWFUL.
I'm back to my classic rock station, which isn't half bad. But no more talk radio for me, for the duration. I miss it. I was really enjoying it. Damn!

16. While you're waiting for Air America
Have you tried KPFK? It's 90.7 in LA. Jerry Quickley on Beneath the Surface is SO worth the listen.

12. It's gone from that station - they may get another
When I heard that ted Olson's law firm got involved in the case, I knew money wasn't the issue. "Free market" is an empry word outta them like "liberating Iraq". They want to hold on to the airvawes to the truth cannot come out.
But truth is a daughter of time. It always does.

13. They posted their plans to end at this station April 30th
at least two weeks ago. It's not like this was any big surprise, I think they expected to have another Chicago station by now.

It drives me nuts the article brings up the stop payment "bounced check" deal, but doesn't mention they got a court- ordered injunction the next day.

I don't know why Air America doesn't just get pop-ups for ads. I have to go to the website to for streaming every day, and they are saying they have up to 2 million streaming.
