Voters to decide key state, South Mississippi races (today)
THE SUN HERALD

--- Some South Mississippi counties will use multiple ballots for today's party primaries. The multiple ballots are to accommodate races that cover only part of a county. Readers interested in seeing the format of the ballots in each county should refer to The Sun Herald's special election section, which was published July 27.

After soaking in months of political advertising, "Get out the vote" rallies and door-to-door campaigning, voters today will choose party nominees for offices as well known as governor and as little known as constable.

In fact, more than 20 different state, district and county offices are on the ballots today in South Mississippi's six counties. The primaries, put on by the Republican and Democratic parties, will help narrow the field of candidates in the Nov. 4 general election. ---

1. MS Governor
Can our Mississippi DUers (BOSSHOGG, Jchild, etc.)fill us in on the status of this race? I really can't stand Haley Barbour. I hope Mississipians will see him as a blow dried Washington politician.

2. Nothing much new...
Musgrove's in trouble and the economy sucks, but some things work in his favor. He has plenty of money-roughly 5 million in the bank, compared to 2 1/2 million for Barbour-sadly, a visit by Cheney or Bush could easily make that up in one night.

Teachers are solidly in his corner, he's brought the state's first automobile plant (Nissan), and he's greatly expanded the number of children getting health care.

Also, a black state senator, Barbara Blackmon, is running for the nomination for Lt Governor. If she wins, it'll be the first time since the 1800's that there's been a black major party candidate for statewide office. Black turnout SHOULD be tremendous which should help Musgrove.

That's what I'm counting on anyway.
