It wasn't all serious stuff

CP 2004-05-01 03:13:13

WASHINGTON -- Paul Martin talked baseball with the president. Then he compared football and hockey notes with George W. Bush's national security adviser, Condoleezza Rice, well-known on Capitol Hill as a sports addict as well as the big guy's closest confidante.

"I can't believe how much she knows about hockey. It's really quite impressive," Martin said.

"I must say, Mr. President, that it's very clear that Canada and the United States, working together, we can make great progress."

"You betcha," replied Bush, who was presented with a riding jacket bought by Martin's wife Sheila.

1. A riding jacket?
Is that what they wear on golf carts? Because nobody is getting George on a horse.

3. Oh excellent
The National Security Adviser of the United States has nothing to talk to the Prime Minister of Canada about except hockey. I'm sure George W. Bush has an excellent chilli recipe somewhere too. But shouldn't our elected politicians and their most senior aides have something, well, tangible and substantive to talk about?

Or is that too much to ask?

4. "You betcha' "
Rice sure as hell doesn't know anything about foreign policy or telling the truth. I'm sure it was a productive meeting. "You betcha" "

Man's liable to get beat up for saying "you betcha" in West Texas.

He must be hoping to appeal to swing voters in Minnesota.
