"CAIRO, Egypt - Arab television stations led their newscasts Friday with photographs of Iraqi prisoners being humiliated by U.S. military police, with one main channel saying the pictures were evidence of the "immoral practices" of American forces."

Photos show US soldiers tortured Iraqis
(Agencies)
Updated: 2004-04-30 10:20

The U.S. military is weighing disciplinary action against the Army general who was in charge of a prison on the western outskirts of Baghdad where American troops were accused of abusing Iraqi prisoners, officials said on Thursday

A US soldier makes a thumb-up sign as she ordered one naked Iraqi prisoner of war sit on the back of another. (cbs)

/snip/

Brig. Gen. Janice Karpinski.

Brig. Gen. Janice Karpinski, in charge of the prison, could be relieved of her command, blocked from promotion or receive a letter of reprimand after a noncriminal administrative investigation relating to events at Abu Ghraib prison, said Col. Jill Morgenthaler, a military spokeswoman in Baghdad.

So this is how the USA is now perceived in the World.

And a lot of people, myself included,

doubt that this is the "one and only" incident.

22. MEET WAR CRIMINAL LYNNDIE ENGLAND
Families of the 372nd tormented by stories of POW abuses in Iraq

http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/nationworld/iraq/bal-te.md.soldier30apr30,0,160127.story?coll=bal-home-headlines

At most, the 372nd's alleged abuses of prisoners were "stupid, kid things - pranks," Terrie
England said, her voice growing bitter. "And what the do to our men and women are just?
The rules of the Geneva Convention, does that apply to everybody or just us?"

Everyone had been proud of Lynndie England. A Wal-Mart in nearby LaVale displays her photo
on its Wall of Honor. The Mineral County courthouse in Keyser, W.Va., posts her photograph
and those of other local soldiers under a banner that says: "We're hometown proud."

Lynndie England had found purpose, and love, in the Army. She got engaged last year to a fellow
member of the 372nd, Charles Graner, who appears with his arm around her in the newspaper photo.

THE FIANCÉE WAR CRIMINALS

Now, Lynndie England is detained on a U.S. base - her family declined to say where - and is
barred from leaving for anything besides her job. She has been demoted from the rank of specialist
to private first class. And when she calls home, she says frustratingly little.

On Edit: The Mother of this creature is exhibiting an anti-social pattern of minimizing and
criminal thinking. I'd love to see a DSM diagnosis of both mother and daughter

does anyone not see WHY AUSCHWITZ was tolerated

Well and there we have it.

A noncriminal, administrative investigation. That's mighty serious indeed </sarcasm> Shows you just how seriously the military is taking this.

Wow. A letter of reprimand. That'll shake her up :eyes:

Maybe they could send one to Bush while they're at it. Show him how pissed off we are.

12. Actually, most of the torture and abuse came from MERCENARIES
hired to do all kinds of things, including interrogations, as just reported by The Guardian.

Mercenaries hired by The War President with our tax money conducting "interrogations", talk about selective intelligence, most of all this act by mercenaries HAS HELPED OSAMA BIN-LADEN'S CAUSE by fueling anti-Americanism and puts our troops at risk, troops that had been abused by being ordered to take reprisals for mercenaries, shutting down newspapers, targeting world press and other undemocratic policies that should be investigated imo.

Robert Baer, formerly of the CIA, (as quoted in The Guardian article) put it best when talking about the use of MERCENARIES to conduct interrogations, "It's insanity."

The mercenaries named were Titan and CAIC. Dyn Corp has the contract for training Iraq corrections and police.

My WWII USMC dad fought against militarism and fascism, as sole surviving son of a Marine (604th Platoon) and an American citizen that also swears to defend our Constitution-what the fuck is wrong with some USMC today???????????????????You do not fight under or for corporate logos-you only fight for US, these mercenaries are harming you and US, USMC fight only for Old Glory, which is US-you should take out those mercenaries as unlawful combatants imo.

23. Allegedly the ANAL RAPE did
http://english.pravda.ru/accidents/21/93/375/12666_UStroops.html

CBS TV Channel broadcast the photos of the US soldiers humiliating Iraqis in Abu-Garaib prison.
Iraqi prisoners were forced to make oral sex and fight each other, they were beaten by Americans who made pictures of all this. Smiling Americans are in these photos as well.

The prisoner on the photo has electric wires attached to his genitals - he was probably tortured with electric power. On another photo a dog is attacking a prisoner. A dead body of a fiercely beaten Iraqi is on the next photo. However, the most shocking images will remain unknown to public: a prisoner testifies that the male soldier working as a translator, raped the Iraqi while his female fellow-soldier was watching the scene and making pictures - there are no these photos in CBS "collection".

Maybe the ghosts of previous scary Husssein guards possessed the normally decent American MP's, and forced them to abuse these prisoners.

Today in the Rose Garden, he congratulated himself on "Mission Accomplished" -- well, pesky press folk needed to get it straight that he meant a part of a mission was accomplished.

Like eradicating torture rooms.

Ooops. Um, maybe he meant, ridding Iraq of torture rooms run by Saddam, and replacing them with torture rooms run by the Coalition of the Killing.

I just don't get it -- why mobs of angry Americans haven't marched on Washington DC (or Crawford) with pitchforks and torches and deposed our own Saddam yet.

in a way that the world will believe.

LET THE PRESS AND THE RED CROSS IN.

ALL credibility is gone now, so unless independent organizations that have NOTHING AT ALL to do with the USA, are allowed in to investigate and report, no-one is going to believe them.

Having no, or literally no independent reporters in the country, and very limited access fir the Red Cross and similar organizations, The USA has put themselves in this position.

All their friggen bombs and super-duper war toys can't fix this.

They need to develop some decency,
and in the meantime, get the feck out of other people's business.

I don't go out much, but everywhere I went today was "can you believe this sh_t" and so on.

You think Canadians had their doubts about the USA before?

Let me tell you, we had a problem with our "Airborne" a while back. It no longer exists. done, disbanded, gone - - -. I don't remember any specifics, but some ended up in jail, many dishon discharged, and the whole outfit shredded from the top on down, there was no "thinking about disciplinary sh_t" - it got DONE.

The WH and Pentagon better open the books far and wide,

because what little if any trust the general world population had for the USA

- it's GONE!

But alas, King George and his gang will think they can sleaze their way out, sacrifice a few officers, then back to business as usual.

Gotta "stay the course" ya know, even if your on the wrong road!

BUT

he still managed to get it lower.

Sad though, he may be able to pull the wool over the eyes of the United States, but that's about it.

And as for terrorism?

48. Jeez -- you're right
After all, the US Army has been taking instruction on methods of occupation from instructors from Israel.

Smart smart move. Look at how well they do it!

The only thing I think Concerned Canuck has wrong is that Bush is alarmed by the intensification and spread of the war. Sadly, it's part of the "comprehensive plan to eradicate terrorism". What others refer to as a World War, or a Regional Quagmire. Everything is going exactly according to plan!

Since we are fighting an indefinite entity (terrorism) -- Bush even says that when lots of Americans are being killed, that it's a GOOD thing, because it means all the terrorists are all in Iraq. You see -- the more we enrage Muslims, and the more terrorists we create worldwide, the more terrorists we can eradicate, and so much more quickly! (Rationalization soon to appear in a Snotty McClelland press conference)

the military had better hide them.

They are clearly known to the resistance now and are dead if they show their faces in Iraq again.

That may be why the military is going through the "slap on the wrist" process:--first as a public relations band-aid on this broken leg, but moreso as a cover to just get them out.

Frederick, a Virginia prison guard, is charged with assaulting detainees, ordering prisoners to strike each other and an “indecent act” for observing one of the sexual abuse incidents. He insisted, however, that his actions were not those of a rogue soldier, but were sanctioned and encouraged by military intelligence and the CIA.

Along with other reservist jail guards, he was directed to physically and mentally “prepare” Iraqi detainees for interrogation. He said that dogs were also used as “intimidation factors” against prisoners.

One of Frederick’s email messages said: “Military intelligence has encouraged and told us ‘Great job.’ They usually don’t allow others to watch them interrogate. But since they like the way I run the prison, they have made an exception. We help getting them to talk with the way we handle them.... We’ve had a very high rate with our style of getting them to break. They usually end up breaking within hours.”

As these comments make clear, torture in US-run Iraqi prisons is an integral part of the illegal occupation. A systematic process of brutalization is being directed from the upper ranks.

At the same time, the fact that US soldiers are employing methods similar to those used by the Nazis in World War II is indicative of a deep-seated state of demoralization and degradation that the occupation has bred within the US military. Finding themselves in a hostile environment with the vast majority of Iraqis opposing the occupation, many American soldiers have come to see the country’s entire population as the enemy. Fed lies about the colonial intervention in Iraq being part of a global “war on terrorism,” some have also assumed a license to torture and humiliate their helpless captives.

snip>
Washington anticipated and prepared in advance for the war crimes now being committed against the Iraqi people. No criminal charges can be brought against a US soldier in Iraq because the puppet Iraqi Governing Council has given the American military a blanket amnesty from prosecution. Secondly, with the backing of Germany and a number of other countries, no US soldier or citizen can be prosecuted for war crimes in the International Criminal Court.

47. i don't see why they can't be trusted, as long as you know
it's an arabic source. people judge the arab newshounds like they judge ours as if we all listen to fox. their headlines are what i'd expect from a yahoo/reuters feed.

49. Thanks leQ, I wasn't so worried about whether it could be trusted as how
widely it is read over the world. It's a pretty damning article. It's not that I don't want people reading damning articles on the US, it just causes much concern for more violence around the world against Americans or anyone else seen as an ally of the US.

39. Believe it or not, incidents like this can lead to...
...world wars. If this doesn't lead to further jihad, I will be greatly surprised. If nothing else, any new westerners who are kidnapped in Iraq won't be freed unharmed anymore. That was before, this is now.
