Saudi complaint at US media image (BBC)
Saudi Arabia's foreign minister has complained that criticism in the US is harming Saudi efforts to fight terror.

Prince Saud al-Faisal blamed parts of the US media for demonising Saudi Arabia, citing several recent books which said it nurtured extremism.

He said the country's critics actually served al-Qaeda militants who wanted to overthrow the Saudi monarchy.

In a speech at New York's Foreign Policy Association, he said alienation and suspicion had to be reversed.

They have the announcement for the event online, but it's not yet in their media library.

6. He's been well-trained by our right-wing propaganda machine.
Unbelievable for him to assert that the US media info on his country's creation/support/financing of al Qaeda is harming his fight on terrorism. Turn that reality inside-out and upside down so that you can pretend that this had nothing to do with you or your tyrannical governing body.

Just another despot.

7. He appears to be talking about "Saudi Arabia" as a country, which
would include many, many people who are not part of any monarchy and not part of a terrorist group.

The mass media has made a habit of portraying Saudi Arabia and people from there in the most racist of caricatures. And many posters seem to have knee-jerk reactions to the very mention of the country. There are probably many ordinary people in Saudi Arabia concerned with some of the same things many ordinary people in the U.S. or Europe are concerned with -- jobs, housing, health care, education, retirement.

Are some of us on these boards buying into the Neocon propaganda that everyone in an entire country is a terrorist? Say it ain't so. Maybe the distinction between the people and their monarchist government should be made. Would anyone on DU want to be identified with George W. Bush and his policies?
