President Bush's re-election campaign will begin airing commercials tailored to Maine today - a further indication of the state's importance this year and the first time a presidential candidate has designed a television ad specifically for Maine.

The 30-second ad, called "Maine Weapons," accuses Kerry of having a "troubling" record on national security. It is part of the Bush campaign's two-week "Winning the War on Terror Tour," designed to cast doubts on Kerry's credentials on security issues.

"I think the Bushes are still smarting over the fact that the state that holds their family's summer home has been so inhospitable in the last decade," he said.
Maisel, at Colby College, questioned the dig at Kerry on body armor. "Even the least sophisticated viewer understands that he is not voting against body armor for the troops in the field," he said. "They overdid the ad and it basically loses credibility for everything he says about that issue."
