Perry gets number of justices on Supreme Court wrong, flubs Sotomayor’s name
By Associated Press, Updated: Friday, December 9, 3:38 PM

DES MOINES — Presidential contender Rick Perry said there are eight Supreme Court justices, not nine, and flubbed Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s (SOHN’-ya soh-toh-my-YOR’) name in an editorial board meeting at The Des Moines Register.

Perry met with the board Friday. He struggled for six seconds to come up with Sotomayor’s name, then initially called the justice “Montemayor.” A member of the newspaper’s editorial board helped him out with the correct name.

He went on to criticize “eight unelected and frankly unaccountable judges.” Nine justices sit on the Supreme Court. They are nominated by the president and confirmed by the Senate.

Similar gaffes have plagued Perry. On Thursday in South Carolina, he corrected himself after saying the U.S. is at war in Iran instead of Iraq.

3.  8 justices?
So how do they get 5 to 4 split decisions?

Rick Perry like a bag of wet dryer lint but only a little dumber.

"There are eight justices and one chief justice, so the Governor was actually correct."

Let's see how long it takes...

As I understand it, politicians can flub basic names and numbers on the campaign trail if they're tired.

13. This is what we sing in Dallas at Christmas these days
Edited on Fri Dec-09-11 07:59 PM by DFW
to the tune of "We Wish You A Merry Christmas:"

We wish you would take Rick Perry, we wish you would take Rick Perry
We wish you would take Rick Perry, a long way from here

Take him far away from Austin, please send him on beyond Boston,
Where cold arctic snows are frostin’, and keep him all year!

He’s expert at execution, he’s less good on elocution,
He’s brought us some bad pollution, take him far from here

We wish you a Merry Merry, but please take away Rick Perry,
And take him a very, very long distance from here!

34. The Supreme Court justices are not numbered by how many have recused themselves from cases,
but by how many sit on the Bench. It's 9. That's how many Justices there are: 9. Shit, I knew that when I was seven or eight years old. But then, at seven or eight, I was already a towering intellectual compared to that moronic dish of skim milk...

21. I feel moved to defend Texas because of Perry.
As a former long-time resident of the state, I don't honestly believe that Texas would have put this guy in office but for one of two reasons:

(1) his hair
(2) the voting machines

I strongly feel the second reason is the stronger, more logical reason. Texans have not in the past acquitted themselves well as judges of intelligence in their elected representatives, but I do not think, even with his hair, that Perry would have received the number of votes he is said to have received. I strongly lean toward the e-voting explanation.

25. So, who's the justice he likes?
I think it's Scalia. Thomas thinks exactly like him but since Perry probably thinks he's as conservative as he is to fight off his obvious liberal tendencies, Thomas is lumped in with the other seven.

The media uses the term gaffe...it suggests it's a mistake. They should just call him a dumb ass :-).
