The Discovery Channel is set to air the documentary series, which is co-produced by the BBC, thoughout North America next March.

1. It is about...
time this issue was made front page again. It is or should be part of the focus of OWS and other occupy movements.
Right now Texas is under a very cold mass of air which is so unusual as to be profoundly disturbing. Climate change could mean that Texas will be a cold dry desert more like the arctic than what is has been for the past 15,000 years.

2. Funny we have to have our own "version" of the show...
Do they dummy it down for us, change the facts, leave out the science? I'm reminded of the great movie line, "YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH."
What happened here?

3. They just don't like a British narrator
They've done it for many of the major BBC natural history series. Most are narrated here by David Attenborough (he basically has 'living treasure' status in the UK; he's probably the most 'trusted' person in the country (he never does voiceovers for adverts, because he thinks it would be abusing the trust people have in him), and so they'll use him whenever possible). He does have a classic BBC 'received pronunciation' accent, and perhaps some American companies think it sounds 'elitist' - I wouldn't have thought it's a question of not being understood, since it's pretty clear, without being 'posh' in the way the royal family are.

5. That's sad, I love Attenborough's voice.
It has a wise, grandfatherly quality.

15. What is really ace
is him hearing say the words to Wonderful World and then chuckling at the end.

17. I always liked how he sounds completely enthralled by *anything* he's talking about
That gets infectious quickly.

4. I wonder if the BBC/Attenborough version is available for sale?
Edited on Wed Dec-07-11 08:45 AM by Dover
It might make a great stocking stuffer. I know I'd prefer the original version to the one with Baldwin's voice over.
I own some of Attenborough's DVDs for other series he did for BBC and just love them. They are among the few DVDs I've
owned that I enjoy watching repeatedly.

On edit: I checked out Amazon and found out that it WILL be available but is not out just yet. Perhaps they'll
make it available after it airs. You can get on their waiting list, however.

12. I'd prefer the Attenborough version also. It's silly to "Americanize" the voice over.
I hope they'll release it to the US just as is.

7. The Attenborough narrated DVDs of "Planet Earth" and "Life" outsell the American narrated ones...
so why the need to Americanize it at all?

20. Why yes: Welcome to the post-modern world.
{
The aide said that guys like me were "in what we call the reality-based community," which he defined as people who "believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality." ... "That's not the way the world really works anymore," he continued. "We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors…and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do."

14. And people wonder why the US won't join the Kyoto Protocol (etc)...
...our conservatives have a stranglehold on media and public opinion. On what info we're allowed to consider.
It's sad. Just watch Washington Journal and see how many christian 'prank' calls come in daily. Sheesh.

They're organized and very active in every single public forum, not just among their own.
Lech Walesa was once asked how Solidarity started. He answered, "By talking loud at the bus stops."

21. Right on!
"our conservatives have a stranglehold on media and public opinion."

Their constant drumbeat that the EPA (and treehuggers) are strangling industry and jobs has had a profound effect on public perception of climate change.

19. Yes
And also got it here we've got on BBC iplayer here too for 7 days forward from that showing.

Each of us would attach our own significance. To me it was two issues. Firstly the Arctic icecap has reduced in size by 30% since 1980 and the thickness of the remainder has halved. Less ice means less reflection of the suns rays and higher temperatures as a result. Secondly water on top of the pure water glaciers is now more predominant - that water eventually finds its way to the bottom of the glacier and accelerated its demise as it acts as a lubricant. Its glacier melt which will increase sea levels.

There some beautiful photography in that episode and some touching moments such as Attenborough sitting down with penguins and also stroking an anesthetized polar bear which had had a tracker fitted.

I've ordered the complete Blu-ray set which is released here in the UK tomorrow.
