Occupy Wall Street's Day of Disruption Begins

'Occupy' Protestors Vow to Shut Down Stock Exchange

By ALAN FARNHAM and SUSANNA KIM (@skimm )
Nov. 17, 2011
New York City activists, angry at having been evicted from their encampment, began a "Day of Action" today in an attempt to disrupt the New York Stock Exchange and transit in the city. Police moved in downtown this morning and began arresting protesters who were blocking access or jumping over barriers.

Protest organizers claim today's events, falling on the two-month anniversary of the Occupy movement, will be their biggest yet. A New York City deputy mayor said yesterday that officials are bracing for the possibility that thousands may try to clog subways and bridges. Occupy protesters in other US cities are also planning disruptions.

The group in a news release announced it would rally near the New York Stock Exchange, then head to subways and march over the Brooklyn Bridge. "Resist austerity. Rebuild the economy. Reclaim our democracy," the group wrote

"The protesters are calling for a massive event aimed at disrupting major parts of the city," New York Deputy Mayor Howard Wolfson said in a news conference. "We will be prepared for that."

8. Not the first time...violating the no sitting rule...disabled women was arrested in Raleigh
last month. Apparently you may stand only and where we tell you to and what time we tell you to...and soon to come, these are the demands you can ask for (tax cuts for the rich, make the poor pay their fair share, we love perverted capitalism...etc).

9. Life, after Rove and the implementation of P for a NAC.
It's going to get ugly before it gets better. However, enough BS has been thrust upon us that action is warranted (needed).

My full support goes out to these citizens on the front line.

... for showing us that we are NOT POWERLESS!!! For showing us that there can and will be a day of reckoning - and that day will be brought to us by the people, not by a political system that is rotten to its core. Please stay safe.

Obama OK's use of force in Occupy crackdowns

Washington Post is reporting that President Obama's spokesman has said that it's up to New York and other municipalities to decide how much force to use in dealing with Occupy Wall Street demonstrations in order to "balance" the Constitutional rights of the peaceful protesters with the cities' municipal health/safety concerns.

I'm sure some here will find a way to disagree, but this statement is effectively a green light from the President to 1%-er Mike Bloomberg (and other mayors) to use as much force as he sees fit without expecting any hassles from the Obama admin. I don't think Bloomberg could ask for a clearer endorsement of his actions. Protesters: you're on your own.

<snip>

Earlier, several diarists had discussed a report in the Minneapolis Examiner which claims:

'Occupy' crackdowns coordinated with federal law enforcement officials
The crackdowns have been eerily similar, lending some credibility to the report's assertion that theses are being coordinated by the Obama administration: the crackdowns have occurred in the most heavily Democratic cities (e.g., Portland, Oakland, Berkeley, New York, although a few conservative cities have also been targeted) and the tactics used were very similar (late night raids by riot police descending with overwhelming force to enforce minor regulations while the 24-hour news media "happens to be asleep"). The main points of the report also appear to The main points of the report also appear to be corroborated by the comments of Oakland Mayor Jean Quan to the BBC, when she said...."
