Apple Gets Some Praise in China on Environment

Chinese environmental leaders offered cautious praise for Apple Inc.'s attempts to meet their concerns, commending its efforts to increase scrutiny of suppliers but criticizing the computer company for what they said was a continued lack of adequate transparency.

Officials from the Cupertino, Calif., maker of iPhones and iPads met with the leaders of five environmental groups on Tuesday, some of the leaders said. Apple told them that it has launched audits of 15 suppliers the groups had previously accused of polluting. The company said it had completed reviews of 11 of the suppliers, said Ma Jun, one of China's best-known green activists and director of one of the organizations, the Beijing-based Institute of Public & Environmental Affairs.

"This is a major step forward," Mr. Ma said. "They asked these companies to take corrective plans and give a timeline, and Apple will verify whether all these issues have been resolved."

Li Li, another environmental group director who attended the meeting, confirmed the meetings's details, though she added that Apple could take much stronger steps. "Our ability to sit down together shows they have changed and actively want to move forward on this," said Ms. Li, director of EnviroFriends. "But on specific things we are not satisfied and we haven't reached a consensus."

1. I wonder how much influence Al Gore has had on the green
direction of Apple? I think at this time they are the 4th greenest tech company. They need to be #1.
