Quan: Occupy Oakland should organize, denounce violence
Source: SF Chronicle

Oakland Mayor Jean Quan on Tuesday asked members of the Occupy Oakland encampment to work more closely with the city and distance themselves from violent protesters.

The mayor, who has been criticized for sending mixed messages to the tent city growing outside City Hall, said in an interview with KGO radio that the campers need to step up and renounce violence.

"They need to set up a formal committee to dialogue with the city," she said. "We're asking organizations to support the city and to support the cause and to really help us with the dialogue."

So far members of the camp have refused to meet with Quan. She hasn't been welcome since Oct. 25, when police cleared the encampment by force and then had a series of violent standoffs with demonstrators trying to take back the plaza in front of City Hall.

When's she going to ask the Oakland Police to quit it with the excessive force such as the rubber bullets and flash grenades in response to the alleged cases of bottle-throwing?

8. The point of OWS and all the Occupy encampments is that Obama's
attempts to compromise have utterly failed to make life better for Americans.

The banks got bailed-out; we got pushed out. That is essentially the reality we all know.

And now, rather than pay fair taxes and agree to the imposition of tariffs on imports, the bankers are demanding cuts to Social Security and Medicare.

No. A thousand time no.

11. The whole point is that the political, status quo "terms" are what
got us in current messes.
So meting her terms would be total surrender.

16. Not to mention the failure of the police to step up and control the intruders on the occupy movement
Edited on Wed Nov-09-11 02:13 AM by No Elephants
It is not the job of the occupiers to control the bad apples. That is the job of the police.

If anyone has not stepped up, it's Quan, the police and the rest of city government.

Blaming the victims would be laughable, if it weren't so serious in this case.

4. In a sane world, the violent ones should be handed over to LEO, instead of LEO going insane.
The authority figures accuse Occupy of being leaderless or unclear in their messages. I think what leads the movement is an innate sense of what is right and wrong, not legal and proper according to the forces that rule. And their message is that the world belongs and should be occupied by all of us, not by those who have corrupted the government.

Quan is simply not living in the same world as those who are coming to these events, she is part of the government and the system that is corrupted. The solution, however, is hard to define when we want to have a just and fair society through a government instituted to maintain all of us in the face of so many differing voices and concerns.

Such as Paine advocated to bring out peace, as wrote the philosophical basis for the social safety net and it was based on this exact problem we have now, of making retribution to those who have been dispossessed by the powerful:

http://www.ssa.gov/history/tpaine3.html

Quan and other mayors and governors have been laying down rules about time and place. We all like to have things somewhat orderly so that we can count on a few things we have worked to have in life, health care, pensions, jobs, safe water and food air and the freedom to be who we are.

People are unwilling to color between the lines anymore because the 1% have erased the lines in their stampede to take everything that is and isn't nailed down for their own benefit. So her attempt at dialog when she believes that freedom of assembly and speech and piece of dirt to sit, sleep and eat upon, ends between the hours of 10 PM and 6 AM will likely fall on deaf ears.

Although I think that this announcement, despite the anger it causes, is a good thing. She realizes that the Occupation is NOT going to go away.

5. Is she living in some kind of time warp?!
http://news.yahoo.com/occupy-protesters-disavow-oakland-violence-165659545.html

Occupy Wall Street protesters had just a few hours to celebrate what they saw as their biggest victory so far: the peaceful shutdown of the nation's fifth-busiest port. Then the rioting began.

A day after some protesters clashed with riot police, set fires and shattered windows in Oakland, Calif., demonstrators across the country condemned the violence and wondered whether it was a turn that would destroy their cause.

"They don't speak for the majority of people who were here yesterday," said Hadas Alterman, a college student who was gathering trash at a tent camp near Oakland City Hall. "That was an hour of action, and we were out here for 12 hours and it was peaceful."

That's from last Thursday.

13. Oldest trick in the book.
Accuse your opponent of what you are doing.

Then hope some fools will fall for the obfuscation.

If Quan is high on anything now, it would be adrenaline poisoning - a byproduct of being terrified of losing your job, credibility and professional reputation.

10. If the snake has no head she can't have the cops cut it off.
That is the greatest strength of Occupy.
E pluribus unum. You can't stifle the unum until you stifle the pluribus. The former is relatively easy, the latter is virtually impossible.

14. Government of Oakland should organize, denounce violence. And do their jobs.
Edited on Wed Nov-09-11 02:08 AM by No Elephants
They occupiers are not answerable to taxpayers or even to voters. Quan is.

Taxpayers are paying the government of Oakland, including the police, to do their jobs.

The occupiers' "job" is to occupy, period; and no one is paying them to do that.

The occupiers are doing THEIR "job" admirably, despite flip flopping Quan, the police thugs, weather, lack of money, FAILUTE OF THE POLICE TO DEAL WITH THE VIOLENT INTRUDERS ON THE OCCUPATION and all kinds of other obstacles.

Quan has a hell of a nerve to try to tell the occupiers what to do when she and her police have failed miserably to do their jobs.

Talk about not getting it.

RESIGN!
