Red Cross: More than 100 dead in Nigeria attacks

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — More than 100 died in a series of attacks in northeast Nigeria launched by a radical Muslim sect, a Nigerian Red Cross official said Sunday, as sect gunmen shot and killed another police officer.

Ibrahim Bulama told The Associated Press he expected the number of dead to rise as local clinics and hospitals tabulate the casualty figures from the attacks Friday in Damaturu, the capital of rural Yobe state.

While the hard-hit city remained calm and its Muslim inhabitants celebrated a religious holiday Sunday, army and police units manned roadblocks leading into the town and streets remained largely quiet, Bulama said.

Meanwhile, the sect known locally as Boko Haram killed a police inspector Sunday in the city of Maiduguri, the sect's spiritual home about 80 miles (130 kilometers) east of Damaturu. Sect gunmen stopped the officer's car at gunpoint as he neared a mosque to pray with his family, local police commissioner Simeon Midenda said.

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) — A radical Muslim sect reponsible for attacks that left more than 100 people dead in northeast Nigeria this week could bomb three luxury hotels frequented by foreigners in oil-rich nation's capital, the U.S. Embassy warned Sunday.

The unusually specific warning from U.S. diplomats identified possible targets of the sect known locally as Boko Haram as the Hilton, Nicon Luxury and Sheraton hotels. Those hotels draw diplomats, politicians and Nigeria's business elite daily in the country's central capital of Abuja.

The embassy said the attack may come as Nigeria celebrates the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha and that its diplomats and staff had been instructed to avoid those hotels.

Deb MacLean, an embassy spokeswoman, declined to offer further details about the threat or the source of the information Sunday.

about these clowns who want to take Nigeria back into the stone age. These terrorist most likely were radicalized by the Saudi Arabia wahabi charity groups, who go around African establishing muslims schools that end up creating these clowns. Their mission is to eliminate western education, technology and everything modern from Nigeria.

We tried to separate from the Northerners during the civil way but the British who had made oil contracts with the Norther decided it was a bad idea and used all the military punch they had to defeat our fight for freedom. What you see going on in Nigeria is a direct result of western (saudi arabia by way of her western allies) intervention into the affairs of Nigeria.

Anything could lead to a wider war. Theres a faction of the south that still dream of Biafra but the national govt is supported by the west and infact a lot of people are war weary and would rather stomach the uncomfortable relation with the muslim neighbours.

And for support for this Boko Haram clowns, they dont even have much support by the sharia loving northerners. The group is isolated, radials and surprisingly well funded. Their goal is to rid Nigeria and not their small area of all formal education, technology and am guessing christianity makes them very unpopular. Add to this the reaction by the Nigeria security agents which are just unpopular amongst Nigerians.

I find your response properly crafted and with the right tempo. I have no taste for any hyperbolic pronouncements about the country that sometimes come from our fellow citizens. Nigerians are weary of the last civil war but alas that has also given way for the people not to demand for better governance from the leaders. I am hoping that Nigerians of good faith will one day find a way to come together and do what is needed to make it a better place for all its citizens.
