Civilians Dig for Bodies as Falluja Truce Holds
by Fadel Badran (Reuters)

FALLUJA, Iraq-- With guns quiet in Falluja, people dug bodies from demolished homes and displaced civilians trickled back to the city on Friday despite U.S. warnings that a truce with Sunni rebels may not last.

About 20 volunteers shifted rubble with picks and shovels to extract bodies from houses flattened in fierce fighting between U.S. Marines and insurgents earlier this month.

Witnesses said three bodies had been recovered from the city's battered Golan district. Seven were found on Thursday.

2. Well, some people can't or won't believe it
So, yeah, I'm following it from a number of angles. This Reuters story basically confirms the Al Jazeera report about houses being demolished in the Golan neighborhood of Falluja. When I posted that story, some people took offense at the source and immediately disputed the accuracy of the report--even though other journalists are reporting similar things.

And you know, it is an issue that goes all the to White House--I believe the rumor reported by Juan Cole that Bush himself wanted to punish the city of Falluja--. And I see CENTCOM and Public Affairs spinning mightily the story of civilians dead as a result of US attacks. Now even what's his name, interim c*pa health minister Khodayir Abbas has issued a ridiculously low death toll--Kimmet and Sanchez, who have more reason to prevaricate, give higher numbers. And I read some shill for the munitions industry talking about "the Al Jazeera Effect" and that gets propogated in corporate media, along with the little threads of distortion, that, sewn together, veil the essential thusness of this war.

So yeah, I'm not unmotivated.

*c is for collapsing, surely.
