Elizabeth Warren Heckled By Tea Party Supporter
Source: HuffingtonPost.com

Moments into a speech before volunteers here Wednesday evening, Elizabeth Warren was interrupted by a Tea Party supporter who hurled a gender-based epithet at the Senate candidate. The man, who said he'd been unemployed since February 2010, objected to Warren's expressed affiliation with the frustrations of Occupy Wall Street, and argued that the Tea Party has been protesting Wall Street excess for longer than the nascent global movement.

The crowd tried to shout the man down, but Warren told her supporters to let him speak. "No, no, it's alright. Let me say two things," she said. "I'm very sorry that you've been out of work. I'm also very sorry that the recent jobs bill that would've brought 22,000 jobs to Massachusetts did not pass in the Senate."

Speaking in a packed VFW hall, Warren went on to address his question about her association with Occupy Wall Street. "I've been protesting what's been going on on Wall Street for a very long time," she said, but added that the movement has its own independent agenda and will proceed along its own course. "Yeah, so has the Tea Party," the man said, before losing his cool.

"Well, if you're the intellectual creator of that so-called party," he said, "you're a socialist whore. I don't want anything to do with you." The crowd shouted him down as he added that Warren's "boss," presumably referring to the president, was "foreign-born." He then attempted to storm out through a side door. Finding it locked, he retreated out the back of the VFW hall instead.

<snip>

After the event, Warren reflected on the man's outburst, which she said was her first such encounter. "I actually felt sorry for the guy. I really genuinely did. He's been out of work now for a year and a half. And bless his heart, I mean, he thought somehow it would help to come here and yell names," she told HuffPost.

The assault stuck with Warren, and she continued to think about it throughout the night. Hours later, she she said she wasn't upset with the man himself, but rather with those who attempt to channel his anger in a malevolent direction. "I was thinking more about the heckler. I'm not angry with him, but he didn't come up with the idea that his biggest problem was Occupy Wall Street. There's someone else pre-packaging that poison -- and that's who makes me angry," she said.

46. Well said
True, the tea partiers are being led around by the nose and that's easy to do them. I hope that most of them stop, have a cup of coffee, smell the roses and reflect on the real world rather than the counterfeit reality informed by the counterfeit patriotism of Rush Limbaugh and the Koch Brothers. Perhaps then they will join us in the streets rather than shout down any of the few truth tellers remaining.

been to the Occupy Tucson events.

So perhaps there's hope there.

I didn't know that Warren was my leader. Funny how we never mention her at the GA meetings or we haven't received any money from her or her WarrenPac...

Peace,

160. Class Act`
Way to handle that dickish situation I think. And she described the right-wing MSM in this country perfectly too. I mean they have to direct the anger somewhere, so they direct it back, not at themselves for creating the problem, but at those who are trying to solve it.

Two types of republican voters--one group actually benefits financially from them being in power, the very small section. The other group, the overwhelmingly largest group votes based on duping, either through various hatreds, or religious devotion to a very narrow group of religious issues, or a misguided idea that their guns are going to be taken.

See the guy in the photo in Repply 125?

He was at an early Tea Party event.

He wanted to make a sign, but had to ask how to spell "moron."

Someone else, who either really did not know to spell "moron" either or who was out to make a fool of the guy in Reply 125, "helped" with the spelling.

And, voila, the sign in the Reply 125.

We enjoy reminding each other of it.

97. No, these folks, like this man, are full of hate to begin with
They are listening to what they want to hear, hate piled on top of hate...Its the rabble rousers like Fux, Beck, Hannity and Limbaugh who make a pile of money off that hate, channeling where they need that hate to go for the moneychangers.

Its a win win for the top 1% and this loud noise gives them cover for election fraud, cheating, theft, lying and evil they are committing on a daily basis to destroy the constitution and the rights of us all, to make it easier for them to channel our tax dollars into their own pockets.

Sometimes I listen to them on my lunch break. I dont know why, it is like sucking air into a cavity to see if it still hurts. But they always preach against the "man" who isnt completely consumed with beer, football, and hitting his wife when she messes up the evening turkey.

This isnt just on RW talk radio. It is also on ESPN radio. They make fun of what they call the ".edu guy." Meaning someone who works in an academic profession instead of, I dont know, hitting their wives all day long.

So you are 100% correct. There is a definite cultural mindset that anything other than brute, unadulterated force is weak, liberal, and undesirable. Once I said that i like manatees in front of some Republican friends. I was made fun of because the manatee isnt violent enough and doesnt have a built in weapon. The guy who made fun of me is a librarian.....I teach classes on military history. Yet I was not the "true man."

119. They need to start reaching out to these people in a serious way...
The left in America is far less adept at tapping into discontent than the right is.

Part of the problem is the sneering classism one sees in the contemporary Left, such as the tendency to denigrate the rural underclass as ignorant hicks living in trailer parks. I despair when I see those posts, it simply confirms the belief amongst the white rural proletariat that the Democratic party is for ethnic minorities and latte-sipping luvvies. When was the last time you heard a leftist speak with a strong Deep South accent? You never do, because the people from those places learn to hide their accents when they do to university so that people don't think that they're an idiot.

The Democrats have been losing, and losing big, against the Republicans when it comes to white, non-union labour. These people used to be the backbone of the party, particularly for the FDR/LBJ-style social democrats.

49. It is a great response, but not as out of the ordinary as you imply
It is more common for Democratic politicians as most of them are more comfortable with a diversity of opinion than the Republicans. In 2009, there were MANY Democratic Senators and Congressmen who acted just like that when confronted. In some cases, they made the news - and were spun as the tea party making a point! (There was one McCaskill town hall like that) and others that didn't - like the town halls for Kerry and some of the MA Congressmen. The media preferred the funnier sound bites of Barney Frank telling one woman he would rather debate his dining room table.)

It is the best way - and this shows that Warren, running for the first time has great poise, presence and the ability to control the situation. It was excellent that she turned the comment to sympathizing that he was unemployed and might have been helped by the jobs bills (left unsaid - Brown joined the filibuster)

Brown has to be exposed. Not in the Cosmo way, this time (ewwww), but he is touted here as an eminently likeable moderate, very balanced, and so on.

And is he is a Mass native and very well known here, a media darling and quite personable. And, the Kochs back him.

One or two votes does not a moderate make. He has to be exposed as a minion of his caucus who votes with it almost always, but papers over that with some crowd pleasing reason.

He (or more likely, his advisors) are very good at coming up with p.c. reasons for votes that would otherwise anger people here, and NO ONE in the media exposes that. They just grin and glow after every Scott Brown clip and sound bite.

I know many DUers adore Warren and I hope with everything in me that she wins, but I don't think it will be the cake walk DUers think.

It will not be a cakewalk.

I think the Democrats will make an issue of these anti jobs votes. It might have been that, in this instance, either she did go on past the quote to speak of Brown or there was a decision to strategically wait until after the infrastructure vote. Both the First responders/teachers bill and the infrastructure vote are things that the public wants. Brown could have been pushed to vote to save his seat if she had made him the issue at that point. Brown's vote would not have made it pass, so it really would not have helped us - while it would have helped Brown claim he is independent.

Does it hurt Brown when he whines about how unfair it is for the LCV - a one issue environmental group - attacks him for his bad record? These are not smear ads in the least - and his attempt to say that it is untrue because of the fake DC license which was obviously not meant to be taken literally was pretty weak.

What I did take as heartening was that Warren handled it beautifully - though it may be that being a teacher/professor really has transitive skills to handling small/medium size crowds. It was very good that she responded to his being out of work - rather than ignoring that. His later behavior was pretty trollish.

30. What are the fire laws about a locked exit in a meeting room?
My guess is that he was just so blinded by his hate that he forgot how to operate the mechanism.

Someone with that much hate fueled by the Koch's Tea Party organization and channeled by Fox News will eventually go to one of these open forums armed and willing to kill the candidate and every other "socialist" he can. In an enclosed space a fully armed maniac could kill a huge number of people before he is stopped or takes his own life.

Of course, he'll just be "one misguided person" according to the RNC's pundits, who will of course blame Obama's unwillingness to eliminate all taxes on the wealthy as the reason for the man's rage.

Meanwhile, the Republicans will do everything they can to make sure this poor man stays unemployed.

If the hall was "packed" no exit door should ever be locked. Most likely, as you say, the guy couldn't manage the complexity: He may have pulled where the door sign said "PUSH"

149. Good one, but could be confusing.
"He did a W" could apply so so, so many things.

DUI

Desertion

Having to choose between Jim Bean and your wife

Falling off your own couch

Messing up common cliches

Saying the opposite of what you are trying to say

Lying about reasons for going to war

Spending your country into a bottomless pit.

It just goes on and on.

I say that all the time and mean it literally (I grew up in the Midwest, btw).

She's so classy, and so unlikely to respond to someone like him in kind, that I wonder whether she really meant it literally--"he's been so poorly taught by example that he really believes that calling people names is going to help his situation, and that's unfortunate for him."

Either way, it was a pitch-perfect, compassionate, effective response. I absolutely adore her. :loveya:

I went to a few dances at one in the 90s that was located in central VA. It was also my misfortune to go to a dance at the local Moose Club. Now the Moose Club is actually a front to the KKK. In my opinion, the VFW was only marginally more receptive to new ideas but was still segregated and full of the heckler types mentioned above.

TP are not for revenue increases on the top 1%, closing tax loop holes, health or financial reforms. TP will primary any repug who is not extreme, they fight for wall street, not against it. Their purpose is anti Obama at the expense of the country. Maybe he is afraid that the true real grass movement "OWS" will bring reasonable TP people to OWS and marginalize the TP the to radical extremists who upset town halls, gun baring hicks, sponsored by Fox news, who tells them what to think. Repug TP in congress took Norquist oath BEFORE oath of office and follow that oath 100% before oath of office. No way are TP and OWS alike.

152. She may be able to pass the glass ceiling, but running a POTUS from
Massachusetts is less likely.

After the Sixties, the Democratic Party has needed a "Southern Strategy" for Presidential elections. Clinton (Arkansas) Gore (Tennessee) was one version. Obama was another. Running a Democratic female Northeastern academic lawyer from Massachusetts hits about just about every group the Republicans have worked for sixty years to disgrace.

99. Elizabeth Warren needs to take care with folks like this
They are dangerous. She handled him very well, but I worry for her. That kind of hate has to come out in some way and sometimes, (and we have ample proof of this) it comes out as assassination. The paranoid schizophrenia of this man precludes him of having a job for any appreciable time, even under the best of circumstances.

104. Good on her. I've been trying to put forth that point here and have gotten
oddly immature responses such as "they're too stupid to know they're stupid".

If we play into the corporate and politician game of conquer and divide then they win. We really need to resist the urge to ridicule the Tea Partiers any longer. They were against the bail out too. Let's work together to fix the bs. It has to start with someone, why not us?

The Teabaggers don't do reality. Never have and never will.

In another thread, some people said that we need to try and incorporate these morons into the OWS movement. Warren tried to reason with the bigot, and she got called a "socialist whore" for her efforts.

Fuck the Teabaggers and their irrelevant, unintelligent, racist, and hopefully-soon-to-be-obsolete movement.

113. The Tea Party
folks are upset. However, as we all know, most rank-and-file conservatives dont do much reading (at least not scholarly works) nor do they spend a great deal of time with deep thought. That being said, it is easy for them to get fooled by ambiguous platitudes like "freedom" and "liberty;" which are the memes most used by the right to keep their foot soldiers loyal.

Understanding complex economic issues like derivatives and credit default swaps is also very confusing. Most of us here seek our several, credible sources to figure our what happened to the economy. The right on the other hand uses simple ill-defined social causes like immigrants and big government socialism. Their target audience is ill-informed (i.e. Beck viewers who believe Hitler was a liberal), easy to fool, and are very angry that their lot in life didn't turn out the way it was supposed to. So all the right has to do is dangle a carrot and their followers will pounce.

Warren is affiliated with Democrats. So, according to the gullible, that makes her the cause of all problems, everywhere. I dont know what to do because today it is so easy to get the mush brains to do anything you want. This fellow is an example of that. He felt what he said was just and that Warren was the cause of his unemployment (regardless of facts). How do you win over these people? You tell them the truth, they may listen, but just like an addict...once they hear Hannity speak they slip right back into the same habits.

123. One heckler? One? This not a big deal...
...nor a 'OMG' hair-on-fire moment. Every candidate and/or politician gets heckled. Obama has been heckled by the Left! Our guy! Now had the hall been besieged by a horde of raving Tea Party Loons charging the podium, that would be a different matter. But, it was one guy. One. As to the misogynistic slur, many progressives have no problem including it in their verbal arsenal. That makes it OK? It's 'Be Tough-Thick Skin' time as Ms Warren showed. I wish I could vote for her... and she's on my 'Short-List' of potential future Presidential candidates.

129. The right wing propaganda machine is very effective
at making ignorant white males feel like victims of the liberal conspiracy that takes from the white male and gives to minorities. They have no idea they're being played for saps. In the meantime, Rash Limbaugh et al, gets paid very well by the GOP propaganda operation. The GOP has successfully exploited the great dumbing down for cheap political gain. It's immoral to take advantage of the mentally challenged.

135. THE SPLIT IN AMERICA
We have to understand that we (The people of this country) are turning on each other. We have seen a split in social class on an economic level and a social level. The man who committed the disruption is...well he is mad, just like the rest of America. We are not mad at one person we area mad at the whole system. We are mad at a system that failed to follow the rules of this country. We, the middle class (The back born of this country) are mad because we have been put on the back burner. I, an America citizen am mad at the fact that these people (The people we elected) have failed. I don't care what party line you are on or crossed. We have lost our way as Americans. We have lost the concept of right and wrong. We are like the kid on the play ground with the big red ball that does not want to play with anyone else. I will have to ask this one question..."Is this the American Dream we have all dreamed for, or is this the Roman Empire in modern times." I love this country, I love my people....But we need to open our eyes. We do need to get mad, we need to fight in what we believe in. It does not matter if one person agrees with you or if a million people disagree with you, what matters is what we believe in. Case and point...We as Americans need to get mad, we need to unite, not matter our race, religion, creed, or color. We are Americans, we all should be mad at the system that failed. A Lt. Colonel I personally know once said, "The only thing we have left in this world is the will to fight. This is our final and only option."

Edited on Fri Nov-04-11 01:08 AM by No Elephants
The 1% divide us and keep us busy hating each other and fighting over wedge cultural issues, while out money flows to Washington, D. C. , where politicians hand it to 1%.

Wall Street, K Street and Capitol Street crush Main Street.

OWS gets that; TP, being funded by the Kochs, does not.

138. And, there's the difference...
If that poor man is out of work, I encourage him to show up at a local library and catch up on news in print from all over the world, instead of where he gets his ideas.

I don't know if the tea bagger mentality will ever gain the ability to think for themselves... How can they gain knowledge, due to the astroturfing of the Koch brothers and mouthpieces who rule his world of information?

Such a great summary coming from Warren. If we come through this time in our history, it'll be due to minds like hers and cool and collective responses like she had.

They're such a loathsome group brought to you by a huge media outlet, they have their own sayings, their own way of making contact with others, they're universally hated (but totally oblivious to this and think they're gods' gift to humanity as a result), and they buy their own brands and so on.

. . . before they do harm to Liz Warren.

Sorry to say, for this teabagger to have the nerve to say "socialist WHORE". . ."INTELLECTUAL creator". . .Warren's boss is foreign-born" to her close-up in-the-face is a BIG RED FLAG, imho.

For certain, this heckler got paid to do this = POLITICAL OPERATIVE. Most teabaggers wouldn't go solo. . . to this length to spew their venom. . .too ballsy. . .had to be paid up front.

Those verbal "slings and arrows of outrageous fortune" are sucker punches rehearsing for the real assault someday.
