2 U.S. Troops Die in Iraqi Convoy Attacks
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Two American soldiers were killed in separate attacks on their convoys over the weekend in the Iraqi capital, the military said Monday.

The first soldier died in a firefight after two armed assailants opened fire, said Sgt. Patrick Compton, a spokesman for the military. The soldiers opened fire, killing one of the attackers and wounding the other. The wounded suspect was taken into custody.

In the second attack, insurgents threw a homemade bomb at another U.S. convoy, killing a soldier. Both of the dead American solders were from the Army's 1st Armored Division, the Germany-based division which is charged with occupying Baghdad.

At least three U.S. troops have been killed in Baghdad in a 24-hour period.

At midday Sunday, an assailant shot and killed a U.S. soldier waiting to buy a soft drink at Baghdad University, firing once from close range.

3. * ought to be forced
to "eat a pretzel" for each casualty!

Oh, I know, that's too much to expect from a demented coward addicted to violence using others!

8. Yeah, it's getting worse
And it could get a LOT worse.

There's a real possibility of open revolt, there are so many damn guns in the country. I can imagine a "Black Hawk Down" scenario where we actually have to start pulling guys out under fire.

Shrub needs to eat his pride and ask the UN for help, or have the guts to send another 100,000 in--it may be the only way to "stabilize" things in the short term.

What a mess.

21. meanwhile,down on the Kuwait border

Brandli retrieved another DMSP image he'd archived from May 3. He compared the two. The most recent photo showed a blazing corridor of light running the length of Kuwait, south to north, all the way to the Iraqi border. The image wasn't there on May 3.

"It's going right up to Iraq's oil fields," says the retired Air Force colonel from his home in Palm Bay. "Maybe I'm full of s---. Maybe all they're doing is building a highway to put in McDonald's and sell hamburgers. But why go that way? I think we're in bed with Kuwait. I think we're pumping oil out of Iraq to pay for this war."

19. The U.N.
This infuriates me.

The UN should have been in there immediately after Baghdad fell. Is it dubya's hubris that keeps him from getting a truly international force in there.........not just for security but also for the concurrent tasks of rebuilding infrastructure and establishing some semblence of local automonous government? Or is it a matter of who controls the oil?

25. w/ the UN in Iraq
oil/food program will resume.
no fly zones will be gone.
Saddam will be reinstalled or
allowed to run in elections.
(Anyone think Saddam will
be tried in Iraq for WarCrimes?)
US sanctions will be removed.
IraqiDinarOil will be linked to Euro.
Oil to Syria will resume.
Turkey will strengthen relations w/
Iraq.(Kurds screwed again).
Kuwait will get really nervous.
Palestinians will be one step closer
to a single shared state w/ their
"Cousins"

With this scenario(a minimum) 2-3
USsoldiers KIA might seem worth it
to Bu$hCo.

9. Such a waste of life
all for a lie and an awol s.o.b. I wish for 2 things: one for bush to be over there on the front lines with the soldiers and two for their noses to grow every time they lie. I feel very sorry for the people who have loved ones over there. I would have to be on a heavy dose of prozac to deal with it.

5. Another Example of the Consequences of this Failed Policy
Bring the Troops Home Now! We are obviously not wanted there (though I think the Liberians could use us now). Howard Dean might want to consider a policy announcement committing himself to the withdrawl of all forces from Iraq within 72 hours of his inauguration.

11. The press only counts "hostile deaths" now...
WTF? Not reporting those killed by other means in Iraq is like saying the same number of troops would have been killed had they been doing normal training at home...

the casualty list was 241. That was only a few days ago. Its now at 251.

We're losing more than one person a day now.

14. It's getting harder to tell one incident from another
and thus, harder to know if the counts are accurate.

At midday Sunday, an assailant shot and killed a U.S. soldier waiting to buy a soft drink at Baghdad University, firing once from close range.

Earlier, I thought I read that this incident was a soldier wounded, now it says shot and killed...

No reporters on scene. Can't believe a word the military puts out.

Every one of these deserves the nation's attention. And those in forgotten Afghanistan, too. I think it is time for serious media protests.

20. Bush* has our troops there to protect the interests of Enron...
...and Halliburton. Friends of Bush* have already made billions of dollars off Iraq...and they plan to make much more in the long run.

- Smirko and company can't admit they were wrong about Iraq...and they can't afford to have the UN snooping around in their oil fields.

22. Exactly!
We can't have the U.N. snooping around while the oil is pumping.. I think AWOL will let them in once some agreement is arranged to give the U.S. billions in oil $$ to 'pay' for 'liberating' Iraq.

23. During this past Fourth of July weekend, the American public
took their long weekend, barbecued, went swimming, fishing, went to the malls to shop and to watch the latest movies. And AWOL went golfing. All this while our troops are facing fire every day and lives are being lost.

What a sad country we live in now.
