Nobel laureate joins Wall Street protest
Demonstrators continue to besiege New York's financial district to protest against high unemployment and the government's economic policies. A Nobel laureate has joined the rally.

About 1,000 people gathered in a park near Manhattan's financial district on Sunday, despite the arrests of 700 demonstrators on the Brooklyn Bridge the previous day. The protestors, mostly young people, carried placards bearing their slogan "Occupy Wall Street" amid tight police security.

Among the protesters was Columbia University Professor Joseph Stiglitz, who received the Nobel Prize in economics in 2001. He criticized the US government for its failure to keep financial markets in check during the global financial crisis of 2008.

Stiglitz said the protests were bound to happen and long overdue, with 25 million people without regular jobs. He expressed support for the protests, noting that they may lead to greater movement toward change.

9. My wonder is....
what's it going to take to provoke Obama to acknowlege the OWS movement? When will he utter words that tells folks he knows what the protesters are angry about?

11. Boy, I wonder! He needs to realize that his "cool" act isn't working for him.
People are interpreting it as not caring. If the arrest of that young girl on the bridge didn't get him and MIchelle boiling mad, I don't know what will...

16. Nuh, keeping his banker masters happy is more important
for Obama than winning in 2012. They are the people who will take care of him and his family after they leave the White House.
He is not going to piss them off.

7. if this continues to grow exponentially
as it already is... will we even be looking at 'business as usual' in six months? I keep thinking that we may see some serious crazy shit unfolding here in the next few months, and even though i hope it stays non-violent, and i think the govt would refrain from getting that heavy handed...but somehow, this machine that we all have been forced to become a part of, is breaking down.

12. That is a victory of sorts - Joseph Stiglitz has been one of my favorite
economist for a long time. That he recognizes this movement is a very good thing.
