Scots prosecutors ask Libya for Lockerbie evidence
Edited on Mon Sep-26-11 03:38 AM by dipsydoodle
Source: BBC News

Scottish prosecutors hope co-operation with Libya may be forthcoming following the regime change in Tripoli.

The Crown Office has asked the National Transitional Council (NCT) to provide evidence needed to convict those who acted along with Abdelbaset al-Megrahi.

Megrahi was released from a Scottish prison two years ago because he has terminal prostate cancer.

He is the only person to be convicted of the Lockerbie bombing which killed 270 people.

1. Evidence would be great.

Because that is the one big thing that has been missing in this case ever since it was tried.

I'm still intruiged by "The Maltese Cross", though I have no problems believing that Ghaddafi was capable of and had the motivation to underwrite such a crime. OTHO, I also have no illusions about the criminality of the CIA/Safari Club in the Reagan years.

2. To a certain extent I think the Scots are boxing clever.
It was only one of their judges being off sick which prevented the mistrial being declared. Part of the deal in releasing Megrahi was that he wouldn't pursue an appeal. I think the Scots WANT a fresh trial to help remove all issues associated with his release.

3. I think the Scots are looking for something closer to justice,

rather than just "boxing clever."

The number of anomalies in the conduct of the original investigation and trial--including authoritative accounts from the scene around Lockerbie after the bombing of evidence in the form of wreckage and personal effects being "disappeared," US operatives interfering with the chain of command and evidence, later "evidence" produced having been proven fraudulent, and enormous financial inducements given to the key witness--mean that this case MUST be reopened, and preferably without to much dabbling from outside Scotland this time.

Of course, this long after the event, and amid all the upheaval and internal jockeying for position among the new Libyan regime, whether we can trust any new information that comes out of Libya is another matter ...

4. That was what I meant
Its just the reason for what they are doing may not be obvious - hence the expression boxing clever.

Do you even use that expression over there ?

5. Sure, sorry. Not meaning to pick a fight.
Thanks for starting the thread.

There's enough questionable evidence even without the cooperation of the new Libyan regime to justify reopening the case and probably find Megrahi's conviction unsafe or unproven anyway. Then the question is who actually did it ...

I was just clarifying and didn't mean to sound curt if I was so.

Looks like its a bit arbitrary anyway : http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x5006764
