New Clinton book coming in November
Source: CNN

Washington (CNN) – One year before the 2012 presidential election, former President Bill Clinton will offer the same advice to Democrats as first got him elected almost 20 years ago: "It's the economy, stupid."

Clinton's latest book, "Back to Work," will be released this November, and will offer solutions to some of America's most pressing problems. He may not say the famous words of then-campaign adviser James Carville, but the intent is clear.

Clinton will provide "specific recommendations on how we can put people back to work, increase bank lending and corporate investment, double our exports, restore our manufacturing base, and create new businesses," according to a press release from the book's publisher, Alfred A. Knopf.

"I wrote this book because I love my country and I'm concerned about our future," Clinton wrote in the release. "As I often said when I first ran for President in 1992, America at its core is an idea – the idea that no matter who you are or where you're from, if you work hard and play by the rules, you'll have the freedom and opportunity to pursue your own dreams and leave your kids a country where they can chase theirs."

2. Be fair - he didn't have one in 2008! Just 2004 - in 2000, he just had a confessional interview

the weekend before the Gore convention.

But before 2008 - nothing - I wonder why? After all if Clinton being out monopolizing the limelight was good for the Democarts, wouldn't he have had a book in the wings for late 2007 or early 2008 - or did he understand that it could harm the Democratic candidate for him to be consuming all the oxygen?

Now a cynical side of me wonders if the Carville/Penn criticism of Obama, followed by Clinton supporting Obama - all on the economy - the subject of this book.

The fact is that some of the roots of Obama's problems started because of Clinton economic decisions. If Clinton has different solutions than Obama, he could easily make the case for them to Obama's economic team - most of whom WERE the Clinton team.

5. What decisions
are you referring to? Clinton had a good sound economy all through his presidency.

7. The decision to reduce regulation in the banking industry,
particularly being for, not against, repealing Glass Steigal and the decision to not regulate derivatives and credit swaps. These were two of the things that transformed a foreclosure crisis to a financial crisis. In addition, his welfare bill, that worked when there was a good expanding economy was very bad as the economy went south.

The President often does not have that much impact on the business cycle. The recession of 2000 occurred at the end of his Presidency as the dot.com bubble burst.

9. Repealing Glass-Stegall is probably the biggest faulty decision.

12. Clinton had a sound economy throughout his Presidency because the adverse effects of his policies
were not felt until well after he was out of office.

BTW, if Clinton had a good economy throughout his Presidency, that could not possibly have been all due to him.

11. Poppy started it. Clinton supported it, finished it AND signed it.
Edited on Sun Sep-25-11 12:15 PM by No Elephants
In fairness, Clinton did improve it some before he signed it, but it's been a disaster for American workers.

"Clinton signed it into law on December 8, 1993; it went into effect on January 1, 1994.<1><2> Clinton while signing the NAFTA bill stated: "...NAFTA means jobs. American jobs, and good-paying American jobs. If I didn't believe that, I wouldn't support this agreement."<3>" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Free_Trade_Agreement

Epic fail.

4. Clinton makes a great senior statesman. His comments in the press are most welcome. A book even more
so.

8. It depends what is in the book
Do you seriously think his autobiography being released in June 2004 helped Kerry? If HRC was a candidate, you can bet the book would not have come out then.

15. I wonder about that timing.
I think he hurt Gore, too. And Hillary ran against Obama. 3 for 3 so far.

And now, another book.

16. Wow. How have I not heard about that book before? Shed a new light on
the DLC, New Democrats, Third Way and No Labels.

"In 1998, with First Lady Hillary Clinton, From began a dialogue with British Prime Minister Tony Blair and other world leaders, and the DLC brand -- known as The Third Way -- became a model for resurgent progressive governments around the globe. In April 1999, he hosted an historic Third Way forum in Washington with President Clinton, Prime Minister Blair, German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder, Prime Ministers Wim Kok of the Netherlands and Massimo D'Alema of Italy.
