Hillary Clinton Promotes Women's Rights Treaty That U.S. Has Not Yet Signed
Source: Huffington Post

NEW YORK -- On the eve of high-level meetings for the United Nations' general assembly, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton attended an event on Monday afternoon designed to highlight the importance of women's participation in public life.

Together with a selection of major female world leaders, including Catherine Ashton, the European Union's top diplomat, and Michelle Bachelet, the former president of Chile and the head of U.N. Women, Clinton put her name to a document calling for developing countries -- especially in the changing Middle East -- to clear the way for women to hold leadership roles.

The joint statement read:

We call upon all States to ratify and fulfill their obligations under the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) and to implement fully Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) on Women and Peace and Security and other relevant UN resolutions.

1. Disgusting. President Carter signed it and the US Senate won't ratify.
They are afraid it will cause a flood of abortions. You know how women are - they will just go out and get an abortion even when they don't need one.

:sarcasm:

Pathetic

5. It is her fault, and the fault of every Senator since 1980 who has not pushed for ratification

7. It's DU, did you expect any different?
It's a Clinton hating board. At least it has been since I've been here.

A certain element here can't help but show their ass when it comes to the Clintons.

10. I've been here since 2007.
And it has been a Clinton bashing fest since I've been here, no matter what positive article there may be about either Bill or Hillary. Some even trashed Chelsea when she was helping her mom's campaign.

Might as well be at the Freepers' site.

11. This isn't about Clinton. It is about every Senator since 1980 who hasn't pushed for this

12. The question was asked in good faith. Did she or didn't she?
It's not about it being her fault, it's about how much woman and how much politician occupies those pantsuits.

Did she do the right and moral thing, (even if she knew that the other 99 senators would not support her) or did she pull the same type of mealy mouth stunt hubby pulled with DADT and "America's not ready."?

15. What did Bill do about it? Why wasn't it brought up between January 2007 and January 2011?

6. Thank you, Hillary.
"Secretary of State Clinton is a champion for women's human rights around the world and has spoken forcefully in favor of prioritizing CEDAW ratification many times," Matson said.

"In terms of the president, we would love to see more of a commitment to this coming from the White House, from the president himself. The White House does support CEDAW. The question is, is the White House pushing on CEDAW right now? No."

17. Hillary Clinton
has always worked for women's rights. She worked for women's rights before she was a senator and after she became a senator. She most likely worked harder for women's rights than any of her detractors. And I get pretty sick of this "She's not a liberal" meme. She is much more of a liberal than her husband was when he was President. As for going into Iraq, that was a mistake and it was one many Senators made besides her. She's human, but she's a good human.

18. Women's rights...? I believe in individual and equal rights for all. I was not aware...
that women's rights, men's rights, or any other group rights existed.

19. The State Department does this kind of stuff every damn day.
Their twitter feed is enough to make your head explode. Look at this HRW report on women at risk in Haiti. The Clintons, MIA.

20. What is needed is the ERA !! We need to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment!
There are bills in congress and several state houses...ERA only needs three more states to get it in the Constitution! We have civil rights, gay rights, etc. If we had an ERA, it would cover everyone. Who is still left out?? WOMEN are left out. Unequal pay for one. Women earn something like 77 cents on every man's dollar. The right to work states don't want this of course...they made get sued!!! Of course....most of those are the ones left to ratify...
