Murdoch inquiry into hacking expands to all Wapping titles

By Oliver Wright, Whitehall Editor
Wednesday, 21 September 2011

Lawyers acting for Rupert Murdoch's media empire News Corporation are to question executives at all of its London-based newspapers over their knowledge of phone hacking.

Journalists from The Sun, The Times and The Sunday Times will be questioned by a team led by the City law firm Linklaters and Lord Grabiner QC over the coming weeks, The Independent understands.

Those targeted for questioning have been told they should consider retaining their own legal representation. These lawyers will be paid for by the company, but staff have been alarmed by the implications. Any admission of wrongdoing could result in disciplinary action and evidence could be passed to the Met's phone-hacking inquiry. It is understood that some of those being lined up for questioning are relatively junior executives.

It is understood that a trawl of emails across News Corp's titles is also to be undertaken by its management and standards committee (MSC) to see if there is documentary evidence that phone hacking was used anywhere else within News International other than by the News Of The World.

1. "Lawyers acting for Rupert Murdoch's media empire..."
aka "The search for sacrificial lambs has begun..."

Why is that corrupt organization still being allowed to "investigate" itself?

2. Smells of a cover-up with Scotland Yard enabling it. I could be wrong,
but since when does a company investigate itself? What a nutty idea.

4. Scotland Yard is a building.
The Met are based there. As such the Met is sometimes refferred to as Scotland Yard.

It would be expected of any company that they do at least investigate themselves.

The police need to investigate all of our newspapers.

6. The article leaves the impression that the investigation is being left up
to the Murdoch operations. Will the police conduct a parallel investigation?

7. Already ongoing
while at the same time the Met themselves are under investigation by adjacent police forces. I suppose the Independent article could give the wrong impression to those outside of the UK - you don't get all of the news on the subject which is discussed in much greater depth here on tv news.

Just in case you were not aware the Met / Metropolitan Police only cover the area more or less encompassed by Greater London. I'm only just outside and I'm covered by Hertfordshire Police.

There may well be more interest in the overall subject here in DU than with the entire population of the UK - due to Fox I guess which is a pretty meaningless subject here. That is other than the subject of Milly Dowler's phone which was distasteful.
