Ecuadorans suing Chevron Corp. over pollution in the Amazon rain forest are one step closer to collecting a $9.5 billion judgment against the San Ramon company.

A U.S. appeals court on Monday lifted a lower court's order that had blocked the Ecuadorans from collecting money in the long-running lawsuit.

In February, a judge in Ecuador ruled that Chevron should pay to clean up contamination in the oil fields where Texaco, bought by Chevron in 2001, once worked. But the company persuaded a U.S. judge to block enforcement, arguing that the verdict was the result of fraud. Chevron even filed a criminal conspiracy case against the Ecuadorans.

1. "Chevron even filed a criminal conspiracy case against the Ecuadorans."
Wow. Solid Brass Balls and no shame.

Chevron's lawyers should be disbarred for abusing the law in such a heinous manner.

NEW YORK — A federal appeals court has vacated an order by a New York judge that barred Ecuador from collecting an $18 billion judgment from Chevron Inc. for contaminating the Amazon.

The three-judge panel of the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals vacated the order Monday.

The panel had previously made clear that it believed the company had overreached in its efforts to persuade U.S. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan to strike down the judgment.

A lawyer for the Ecuadorean plaintiffs told the appeals court in oral arguments Friday that they would not attempt to recover damages until the appeals process in Ecuador was completed.
