Former U.S. Sen. Charles Percy dies
By Rick Pearson
Tribune reporter
September 17, 2011, 7:41 a.m.

Charles H. Percy, a brilliant businessman who represented Illinois for nearly 20 years in the U.S. Senate, once headed the chamber’s powerful Foreign Relations Committee, and harbored unrealized ambitions to run for the presidency, died early Saturday. He was 91.

Percy died at 2:30 a.m. Eastern time at a Washington D.C. hospice, according to Kate Kelly, a spokeswoman with WETA, the public broadcasting station in Washington D.C., where Percy's daughter, Sharon Rockefeller is president and CEO.

Percy, a moderate Republican
, entered the Senate in 1966 after defeating one liberal icon, the late Paul Douglas. But he was ousted by the state’s voters when they elected another Democratic icon, the late Paul Simon, in 1984.

Percy was an ardent opponent of the Vietnam War, a supporter of international nuclear non-proliferation, a backer of federal consumer protection efforts and tougher enforcement of laws against drug abuse. He also was the first senator to call for a special prosecutor to investigate Watergate, the political dirty tricks scandal that brought down Richard Nixon’s presidency.

2. There are no republicans
in the house or the senate like Percy. They are all rethuglicans now.

I remember when his daughter, Sharon's twin, I believe, was murdered. Very sad.

3. That was such a bizarre murder.
I always wondered if they kept something quiet for the sake of the daughter and the family. I am not implying a big scandal. Maybe she was being stalked. Times were different. They did not talk about things like stalking, or other problems we consider minor by today's standards.

6. From a time when Congressional Republicans actually cared about what was best for the country,
instead of how to defeat this nation's President.

7. Percy's daughter Sharon is married to Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV)
SNIP

Percy's daughter, Sharon Rockefeller, announced in March 2009 that he had Alzheimer's disease. His death was announced by the office of his son-in-law, West Virginia Sen. Jay Rockefeller.

Jay Rockefeller praised his father-in-law's even-handed political stances in a statement Saturday on behalf of the Rockefeller and Percy families.

"His insistence on a balanced perspective in his public life, (calling himself "fervently moderate"), helped us understand it is both possible and preferable to live in a world without partisanship," he said.

The extreme right really hated Javits back in the day, btw. I used to troll some of the more loony conspiracy sites out there, and there was one guy who claimed that an aide of Javits's supposedly boasted about a 'Protocols of Zion'-type world conspiracy. Of course, it was all Grade-A bullshit, but it just goes to show you how far some fringe Establishment flunkies have gone to tarnish the names of decent politicos like Javits and others. Even President Kennedy was targeted a few times.

15. My dad worked with some of those "liberal republicans"
There was a time that the republican party used to try to recruit smart people ...... and the funny thing is that
most of those smart republicans were vets from WW II and or the Korean War and wanted the United States
to stay out of wars because they knew about the hell on earth that a real war brought about.

Former Senator Charles Percy, a liberal Republican, dies
Source: Yahoo News

Former Senator Charles Percy of Illinois, a leading moderate Republican voice during the Vietnam and Watergate years, died on Saturday, his daughter's office said.

Percy, 91, who served in the Senate from 1966 to 1984, opposed the Vietnam war and sponsored a resolution calling for a special prosecutor to investigate the Watergate scandal during the administration of Richard Nixon, a Republican.

Percy died at a hospice in Washington, D.C., said a spokeswoman at WETA, a public broadcasting station in Washington where his daughter, Sharon Percy Rockefeller, is president and CEO.

In the title former Sen Charles was referred to as a "liberal" Republican. In the very first sentence, he is referred to as a "leading moderate" republican. -Just a side note

14. the "old guard" is leaving us
last month it was Hatfield, now Percy, they are shuffling off this mortal coil one by one.

there weren't a whole lot of the "good ones" to begin with, and now there are considerably less. And what remains of their party is a stinking cesspool of foolishness, insanity, and greed.
