Tacoma judge wants names of teachers who defied order to end strike
Source: CNN

Tacoma, Washington (CNN) -- A judge Friday said striking teachers were violating his earlier order to halt their protests, but he did not penalize the educators.

Superior Court Judge Bryan Chushcoff said he could still decide to fine the union the striking teachers' belong to, and he ordered an attorney for the Tacoma School District to provide him the names of all the teachers who failed to show up for work after he ordered them Wednesday to return to the classroom.

"The order is legitimate, the question is, are we in compliance? It doesn't look like it," Chushcoff told an overflowing courtroom. He told attorneys for the teacher's union and school district to keep negotiating and said that if the strikes continue, he might take action during a hearing scheduled for September 27.

The union and school district have been locked in bitter contract negotiations over a proposed pay cut, class sizes and the issue of how teachers are transferred within the school system. About 2,000 teachers went on strike Tuesday, leaving about 28,000 students in Tacoma with no schools to attend.

Seemed certain he would lose an election in 2010. Did a miracle occur?

Two races decided, one to go. As of 10:19 p.m.:

Chief Justice Barbara Madsen (unopposed) and Justice Jim Johnson (running against Stan Rumbaugh) have won their races and will advance to the general election without an opponent.

Meanwhile, Justice Richard Sanders and Charlie Wiggins are both under the 50 percent vote threshold required to advance unopposed, with Sanders enjoying an 8-point lead. Judge Bryan Chushcoff trails with only 12 percent of the vote.

7. Yes point a gun at their head and demand they teach, if they won't throw
them in prison. That should teach a lesson; or maybe they could report to the classroom voluntarily and then teach about the history of unions in America, or who the judicial system really serves, or how education is indoctrination and reinforcement of social hierarchy, or about anything but the curriculum .

5. i think the show of community support surprised the district officials.
it is harder to penalize striking teachers who have the students and families they serve behind them.
