Planet like Star Wars Tatooine Discovered Orbiting 2 Suns
Edited on Thu Sep-15-11 09:09 PM by socialshockwave
Source: Yahoo.com News

It's a real-life Tatooine. A spectacle made popular by the "Star Wars" saga — a planet with two suns — has now been confirmed in space for the first time, astronomers revealed.

Scientists using NASA's Kepler space telescope captured details of a giant planet in orbit around the pair of binary stars that make up the Kepler-16 system, which is about 200 light-years away.

"This discovery is stunning," said study co-author Alan Boss at the Carnegie Institute in Washington. "Once again, what used to be science fiction has turned into reality."

6. How did Tatooine have oxygen in its atmosphere?
Or Hoth? Or Arrakis? You need a lot of green plants to maintain an oxygen supply.

11. How do you know Jawas aren't photosynthetic? They only cover up...
...to keep from turning bright green!

Seriously, we didn't see *ALL* of Tatooine, nor do we
know how much aggregate oxygen-breathing life is on
the planet nor how long it's been there; it's possible
they're consuming oxygen continuously but there aren't
very many of them so the atmospheric reserves will last
until the ninth episode (May the Force save us from that!).

18. Actually, oxygen is super active, without replenishment...
...it would oxidize into minerals very very quickly in geologic time frames. We'll just have to assume that planet had some oceans or something which produce oxygen.

One of the more strong indicators of life on an exoplanet would be the detection of molecular oxygen.

13. Arrakis is actually explained if you read the appendices of Dune.
Don't know how much scientific water the explanations hold, but Frank Herbert at least knew the problems and attempted to account for them.

Edited on Fri Sep-16-11 06:15 AM by CBGLuthier
Except for everyone who read real SF or saw a single episode of Star Trek.

Wouldn't it be really horrible though if all the life we find out there is cartoon stereotypes from over-rated movies. Nothing but Huts and Klingons and Predators and whatever race Lucas used for the jewish/arab stereotypes.

21. Odds are the two suns would be in close orbit about each other...
...and any Earth-like planet would then orbit much farther
out about the twinned suns' center of gravity. As a result,
you'd get views like Tatooine where the two suns always
appear close in the sky and you still have night and day.

19. The Earth is actually approximately -1F using the same metric. :)
That's why they say this planet is just outside of the habitable zone. Just by a little bit.

(The Earth is not -1F across the entire globe because of weather and green house gases, of course!)
