U.S. urges citizens to leave Syria immediately

Thu Sep 15, 2011 3:14pm EDT

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States on Thursday urged U.S. citizens to leave Syria immediately, saying the government's violent crackdown on peaceful protests had led to an uncertain and volatile situation.

"The U.S. Department of State urges U.S. citizens in Syria to depart immediately while commercial transportation is available," the department said in a warning notice, adding future plans by U.S. citizens to travel to Syria should be deferred.

10. Three down, five likely to go. Arab Spring with full CIA backing.
There are risks, of course, such as having the Israeli Embassy attacked the other day. On the scale of things we can all afford the minor travails.

Long term peace is going to come to the Middle East by way of democracy.

That's how the Arabs are going to find their Gandhi. Their Martin Luther King. Their Carter. Their Mandela.

Assad ??? He'll be getting his Red Notice listing out of Interpol soon enough.

6. Lots of stuff came up first
It's hard for us to keep our list in order when things like Egypt happen. Or like when Syria is willing to torture people for us and take Iraqi refugees in.

It would be much easier if we could go in and kill everyone indiscriminately, but that would be really hard to cover over these days.

7. Syria is more dicey than Libya as there is a Russian military base in Syria.
Anyone else recall Georgia and South Ossetia and the Russians?

The USA and Israel armed and trained Georgia and their president was Georgian but USA educated and with close political ties to the GOP and neoliberals.

The Russians were not surprised and kicked ass against Georgia protecting ethnic Russians and Georgia also lost other territory as well as being humiliated.

Russia (and probably China) are likely to veto actions or sanctions against Syria.

11. UN chief accuses Syria of breaking promises
UNITED NATIONS (AP) -- Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for international action against Syria on Thursday, saying President Bashar Assad has repeatedly broken promises to reform.

Using unusually strong language, Ban accused Assad of "escalating violence and repression" and ignoring appeals to stop, most recently by the Arab League.

"It's been almost six months. I have been speaking with him several times, and he made all these promises, but these promises have become now broken promises," Ban told a news conference.

If Assad's promises haven't been kept, the secretary-general said, "then enough is enough - then (the) international community should really take some coherent measures and speak in one voice."
