Ciena announces layoffs; Triangle impact unclear (425 jobs)

Linthicum, Md.-based Ciena Corp., which has a Triangle office, said Tuesday that it will lay off 425 employees as part of its goal to reduce operating expenses by 10 to 20 percent in fiscal year 2004.

It's unclear exactly how the cuts will affect Ciena's Triangle office, according to spokesman Aaron Graham. He said he doesn't know if there will be any layoffs locally.

"At this point, I don't have an answer to that," Graham says. "If there were to be, it would only be a handful."

Many of the cuts announced Tuesday will come from the closure of Ciena's San Jose, Calif., facility. As part of that closure, Ciena's Triangle office will become the primary center for research and development for the company's online product line.
