Kansas could help form national science curriculum
Source: Kansas City Star

TOPEKA| Kansas is expected to be named one of six lead states for developing national science curriculum standards, meaning it could provide strong input into the formation of those standards, state education commissioner Diane DeBacker said.

"We have it on pretty good authority that we will be named as a lead state," DeBacker told the state board of education Tuesday.

The lead states for the Next Generation Science Standards are expected to be announced next Tuesday.

Being among those states would give Kansas extra input on the drafts of the science standards, which are expected to be in final draft form by the end of 2012, said Matt Krehbiel, educational science consultant for the Kansas State Department of Education.

What? So the flat-earthers might be dictating science policy in schools. This has got to be a joke.

8. I know a little about Kansas.
My boyfriend and his family were Mennonite wheat farmers south of Wichita. But yes, Kansas does have corn fields. I stand corrected. :toast:

7. This is actually a very good idea
Kansas has implemented rigorous Science standards after kicking the idiots off of the state board of ed. There is now a highly respected Science curriculum in place, which is the reason Kansas is included in this project.

Perhaps you should do your homework in the future before engaging in state bashing. Kansas is also home to lots of DUers.

9. As a third generation K stater i agree.
My grandfather was a very very good architect and structural engineer, my father a DVM who spent his life trying to drive out superstition, and I'm an engineer by training. While I didn't go to elementary or high school in Kansas they all did and some of my Kansas State classmates are well known in their fields. I think Kansas is at heart a Progressive state, but politics has become such a joke because of the corporate media leading voters by the nose.

14. Sorry if I offended you.
Actually I have lived in Kansas for over 25 years and my son got a great education in the Shawnee Mission school district. He got a physics engineering degree at KU as well. So go Jayhawks!

20. You're offending all of us
We're proud of our schools which are consistently ranked among the best in the country. Our enemy is Sam Brownback, not ignorant DUers who enjoy state bashing.

12. I was not aware of this...
This is a very rare and welcome positive change...

It's nice to see a red state stagger forward for a change.

I so wish Tennessee could shake free of our own Redstate clay enough to get out of the bottom three.

16. Why is this such a challenge?
Writing appropriate science standards isn't that hard. The problem, as always, is having to deal with the fundamentalist ignorance of the Bible Belt that considers any science that doesn't conform to young earth creationism as something to be fought tooth and nail.
