Justice Ginsburg aboard plane evacuated at Dulles International Airport
By Ashley Halsey III and Patricia Sullivan

{This post is being updated}

United Airlines Flight 586, scheduled to depart Dulles at 12:34 p.m. for San Francisco, was evacuated Wednesday afternoon after it reportedly experienced an engine problem.

The plane departed Gate C19 at 12:41 p.m. and the incident happened prior to takeoff. The plane had not made it to the runway.

“The pilot noticed something wrong with the engines and decided to evacuate the plane,” said Kim Gibbs, a spokeswoman for the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority. “The emergency chutes were deployed. Then the passengers boarded shuttles and returned to the terminal.”

A report from Reuters quoted airports spokeswoman Tara Hamilton as saying there were reports of three injuries, with one person transported to a hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and the others refusing treatment.

2. Ok...so I would have questions...
"An" engine problem? Which engine?

And it could not be shut down? Extinguishers used? Yes, they were heavy fuel but...?

Pictures on the news just now, showed the right side of the aircraft, with ONLY the over wing exits open and slide...The A/C Right doors 1, 2, and 3 were not open (closed)...there was one slide on the ground under the wing tip (looked to be a door slide), so I don't know if that one had been detached and the door it came from closed.

SO...'splain please. Another "hair trigger" incident?

The reason I question all of this is...that it is "generally" more dangerous to evacuate an aircraft (various injuries when leaving the plane and using the slides) than it is to simply shut everything down and be towed to an area where stairs could be used. Yup, people get hurt in evacuations.

Inquiring minds!

5. maybe (speculation on my part) the bleed air was putting fumes in the cabin?
It will be pretty simple for the NTSB to figure out

6. Could be...
In fact, now that you mention it...the B757 is horrible about fume intake, particularly in the back half of the a/c.

Of course, by time the NTSB issues it's findings, well, how much time will have passed? *snarkage about how long it takes*

3. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg Was On Evacuated United Flight
Source: ABC News

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg was evacuated from a flight at Dulles airport Wednesday, according to a Supreme Court spokesman.

The 78-year-old justice and cancer survivor slid down the emergency slide with other passengers of United flight 586, a Boeing 757. There were reports of smoke just after the plane backed away from its gate and the pilot evacuated plane.

A spokesperson for the airport told ABC News that emergency personnel did not find any fire upon arrival at the plane and no foam was deployed to douse flames.

There have not been any reports of injuries in the evacuation.
