Official: Philippines to file at least 2 corruption cases against ex-president Arroyo soon

MANILA, Philippines — Philippine officials say President Benigno Aquino III’s administration will file at least two major corruption complaints against his predecessor, possibly before year’s end.

Budget Secretary Florencio Abad said Tuesday that the credibility of the Aquino administration’s pledge to battle corruption hinges on its ability to prosecute former Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and other officials.

Abad refuses to disclose details of the criminal cases against Arroyo but he suggested authorities could file them before Christmas. At least two complaints are being finalized based on evidence, according to a Cabinet official.

Arroyo, who already faces plunder complaints filed by nongovernment groups, has steadfastly denied any wrongdoing during her rule.
