EAST GRAND FORKS - Sugar workers who have been locked out from their jobs since Aug. 1 are leafleting stores across Minnesota, North Dakota and Iowa today, asking consumers to use their smartphones to send a message to American Crystal Sugar.
The campaign utilizes QR codes, a type of barcode increasingly used in advertising. Fliers bearing the code are being placed in retail stores where American Crystal products are sold, including Wal-Mart, Target, Publix, Kroger and Food Lion.
Once a consumer scans the QR code on the flier with their smart phone, they access a website where the video, “American Crystal Sugar is Killing the American Dream,” is available for viewing. After watching the video, the consumer can learn more about the lockout by exploring the site or sign a petition to send a message to American Crystal Sugar CEO Dave Berg.
The campaign is being organized by the workers’ union, the Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco & Grain Millers and is already underway in other states, the union reported. The QR code shelf flier has been placed in stores in 11 cities in several states: Atlanta, Chattanooga, Dallas, Jackson (MS), Houston, Louisville, Memphis, Oklahoma City, Orlando, San Antonio and Winston-Salem.
