LINCOLN — Attorney General Jon Bruning did not specifically identify his ownership in a controversial lake cabin in state financial reports. But he did list his association with two businesses that owned the cabin as required by a state form.

A question of whether Bruning properly reported his partial ownership in the cabin with two Nelnet executives was raised Monday by the Nebraska Democratic Party, which filed a complaint with the state.

Bruning says he did nothing wrong and followed the law. Democrats say he attempted to hide his ownership in the $675,000 vacation home, knowing it would raise questions.

Bruning came under scrutiny last month after it was disclosed that he had purchased the cabin near Ashland with two top executives from Nelnet. The real estate deal took place about a year after Bruning tried to help Nelnet avoid a $1 million settlement reached over the Lincoln-based student loan company’s questionable business practices.
